this entire issue of imperialism is way too complex to address in one lj comment, but i'll go ahead and make an inevitably miserable attempt at doing so.

first off, your post is built off of the assumption that we're actually in iraq to liberate anyone. "that's bullshit, get off it, this war is for profit, war and occupation can never bring liberation" cheesy anti-war chant, but whatever... it was relevant. the united states has never entered a war or done anything in the name of "humanitarian intervention" without imperialist intentions. this country sucks and we need to stop pretending like we give a shit about anything but profit.

the same can be said of the objectification/liberation of women topic. incredibly complex issue, but i'll take a stab at it. first off, why should i compare this country to the worst conditions for women and settle because we have it better? um, no dice. i have my standards for how HUMAN BEINGS should be treated, and that is equally... REGARDLESS of race, religion, gender, class, sexual orientation, and so on and so on. the fact of the matter is, whether you want to believe it or not, we are not treated equally. one of the reasons we aren't is because patriarchal societies promote male dominance. it sucks... and i'm not going to pretend like it doesn't and i'm not going to be grateful for the blessed gift of having the "freedom" to be objectified. i am unapologetically aware of the shitty conditions we live in (all of us, not just women), and i'm not going to pretend like i'm not for the sake of anyone's acceptance. the ONLY thing i'm sorry about is that more people have not shaken this false consciousness and will still believe everything they are conditioned to believe. question everything (including everything i've said), pick up a goddamn book, and do something about it.
