Avatar, Revisited
I've been reading more buzz about Avatar. And I see the usual finger-pointing over whether it's an enviro-fantasy, or evil white men vs. indians, or even a very expensive remake of the Smurfs.
But one of the oddest things that seems to crop up in these discussions is the assumption that the Na'vi planet came about through natural evolution. Alright that's possible, sure. But it surprised me because when I first saw the show, all I could think was that it was the ultimate RESULT of technology, a genetically engineered ecosystem. Something a former, technological society transformed itself into. Maybe I'm just weird. :)
