During long days of marching and waiting men sometimes took in stray dogs, not unheard of but frowned upon amongst the officers, some hiding their disapproval better than others. Wellesley assumed a large part of their current disdain was to be blamed on his choice of dog. No playful pup, but a mangy-looking mongrel, moments of hiding in the back uncomfortably with his tail between his legs alternating with determined snarling and growling. Wellesley preferred him that way. He had no use for a spoiled lap dog, but Sharpe would make a good hound if he proved to be loyal.
