Take a long drive with me

Characters: David, Sofie
Pairing: DavidxSofie
Rating: Teen, for I'm feeling jolly!
A/N: Oh mah gawd. David is relatively well-adjusted. This must be set several years after the highly incomplete novel. It's a little on the long side. (Okay, it's...lengthy.)
Also, you have maybe heard the song "Possum Kingdom" by the Toadies (maybe you thought it was called something like, "My Sweet Angel" or "Be My Angel") If you are not from around here (i.e., north Texas), then maybe you don't know what "Possum Kingdom" even means, and thought, "Possum Kingdom? What the hell does that even mean?" This one's for you guys.

"You're gonna tell me where we're going?" But Sofie's words were lost under the roar of the stereo and the last traces caught up by the wind rushing in the window and David's eyes were on the road, fingers tapping the steering wheel. Sofie turned off the radio. David looked sharply at him for so long that the speeding vehicle began to veer off the road.
"David!" Sofie grabbed the wheel. David readjusted and stared down the highway again.
"What the shit do you want?" he asked.
"Where are we going?"
"Surprise."
"Well, David. We've been driving for two hours and the way the buildings are deteriorating into trees is a little disturbing."
"Christ, you sound like a woman." David flicked the cd player back on. "Possum Kingdom."
"I'm sorry?"
"Possum Kingdom, you know, you know the song. Be my angel," he crowed over the radio. "Be my aaaaaangel--"
"Oh shit. No. David, that's cruel. What does that even mean?"
"It's a state park. Lake, woods. My friend has a house she's letting me borrow this weekend. Us," he added cutely.
"Oh," said Sofie, and was quiet for another few minutes, and David turned up the radio.
"What are we going to do?" Sofie was watching sign posts zoom past. David drove far too fast for his northern sensibilities.
"Did you like high school?"
Sofie had to think back. His high school graduating class had been 15 people. They had all driven out to the city together on the weekends and gotten shellacked.
"It was alright."
"We're probably just going to drink."
"We could do that at home."
"We're going to drink ourselves into commune with nature." David rubbed a hand across his eyes tiredly, and Sofie could see in the golden light the shadows of lines creeping across his face. He had never thought about David's age much. Sofie grabbed David's hand and kissed it, and David smiled.

I'm not a fanfiction writer, as a rule. But I've been reading a lot of House fics lately... and I read some House/Cameron fluff (!), and defying all logic, it was cute, relatively in character, and excellent. My all-consuming love of HxC was not at all in play and biasing me. So I guess what I'm trying to say is I wish I still wrote fanfiction.
