Lots of random fannish stuff

A meme stolen from somewhere else, Five fics you would rec to someone outside of fandom.

It's an interesting thing to consider, what kind of face you would want to put on to people outside of fandom. This more of a gen-ish list, for people who aren't in fandom at all, maybe trying to ween them into the fannish way of seeing things. So yeah, these aren't necessarily the best I've read, but they are certainly up there.

Anyway:

The Exquisite Barometer (His Dark Materials) - It builds on the books in an interesting way, mostly following Will out into the world, more specifically, college, and it creates its characters beautifully, perfectly intertwining it with the world of the books.

Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose (SGA) - I've been blabbing about this story to everyone who's stupid enough to listen, but it's one of those classics for a reason. It's my favorite kind of story, a story about being human, about hope, about putting your life together piece by piece. It's a story about Rodney moving on, doing the next thing, learning from his mistakes.

Idemnity (House) - It's been jossed now, which might not work as well, but I really like the way it focuses on House and his slow crawl back to humanity, something the show didn't give us, and the way House and Wilson's relationship falls apart and pulls itself back together again.

Benevolent Sibling (BSG) - Okay, so maybe this relies a little too much on people understanding the concept of crackfic (and slash), but it's still insanely funny and accessible to anyone who has seen the show.

Second Verse, Not Exactly The Same As The First (Clerks) - A first introduction to the wonders of slash, I think. It matches the structure of the movie in a way that works for the story instead of against it, and the characters are spot on. Arguably, the person needs to have (a) seen Clerks and (b) enjoyed it in order to like this one, but I think that there are enough people out there who do.

I was tagged by viciouswishes, Post a list of your top five favorite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

Dreams of Electric Sheep (BSG/Blade Runner) - This was so much fun to write, and I'm still proud of the mood that I managed to pull together here. And the writing is pared down and simple in just the way I like. And I think the worlds mesh together very well.

Not Gay (The Office UK) - I saw the first episode and thought to myself, If there's any fanfic for this show, it's totally Tim/Gareth, which obviously, turned out to be very, very wrong, because clearly Tim/Dawn is OTP. This was written for one of yuletide's NYR requests, and it was absurdly fun to write, mostly because Gareth has an awesome, crazy voice, and I managed to get some drunken boy-kissing in there.

A Song To Keep Us Warm (BSG/House) - Even though I've written more of this 'verse, I still consider this to be the strongest, with the best balance and interaction between House and Wilson and the BSG universe out of all the stories. Plus, I am totally in love with New Caprica.

Annus (Batman Begins) - I totally have a season fixation, and this is me indulging. A lot. It also gave me a chance to explore Gotham and Bruce a bit more, and I like the imagery as well.

Things To Do Before You Die (House) - This might just be because I just finished this, so I'm still in that zone, but I love it, and I'm absurdly proud of it, and it makes me happy. I mean, there's a prank war with post-it notes. What more could one want?

Tagging zauberer_sirin, savemoony, lykaios, luvinaoshi and ignited.

But wait! There's more!

So I've been messing around with the GIMP, and so I've made a couple fanfic covers for a couple people. (much of the credit goes to gender for the gorgeous textures)

The stories:

1. savemoony's From Princeton, With Love [ cover] - An awesome House spy AU that crosses over with Alias. At the moment, it's still a WIP, but it's still a lot of fun.

2. queenzulu's Lights To Guide You Home [ cover] - Five ways House found out about Cuddy's miscarriage. It's quiet and sparse and all the more powerful for it.
