this is why I teach...

each week my kids write an in-class essay, and usually they are the mundane essays that one might expect from bored tenth graders, but every once in a while I get one like this, and it reminds me why I'm here. it was handwritten, I typed it, so you have to imagine the messy 16-year-old-boy handwriting, but I left the spelling and punctuation mistakes intact for effect; I removed his name for obvious reasons. the prompt for this essay was to describe what item you would place in a time capsule to be opened in 100 years.

In reality, there is nothing I can show you, that would amaze you or astonish you. You live 100 years a head of my time. So I choose to leave this capsule empty to represent the simplicity of our way of life compared to yours. Although, there are many things in my world that catch my intrest and things I enjoy to research like Atlantis or the universe. You may not know my name or my life, but in my life I wish to discover Atlantis and it's power source, if you don't know my name it means I failed.

Now I am a 16 year old boy with goals and ambitions, but there is nothing I can teach you or show you what you have not seen. I have left the capsule empty to answer your question “what do they have to teach?”. I understand that you are not nearly close to knowing the meaning of life or “what is love?”. I have left this capsule filled with my thoughts, hopes, and ambitions. I have nothing to give you, but I ask you to keep my hopes alive.

My hopes and ambition is all I have to give because when I lived they ment the world to me. So I give you my questions. “what is love?” “what is the meaning of life?”, and “what is my purpose to live?”. When I woke everyday of my life I though of this, I managed to answer one of them, but if I told you I would ruin the meaning. When you th ink it’s time, place this letter and one of your own in another capsule meant to be opened in another one hundred years.

My name is Jxxxx Txxxxxx, a boy who wished to be a cloud ment to drift in sky watching and learning. I may also include my poetry to show you what I fealt. I guess you are disappointed to know there is nothing to be gained in this capsule. Nothing but questions are here along with hope and ambition.
