Don't really know why, but I joined a bible study group on the base. Commander Pinner had been trying to arrange one for a long time, and it finally happened. Only four people were there, but it was nice. There was a Seaman, a Petty Officer, a Junior Officer, and a Senior Officer, all in one group. We represented basically the entire scale of rank, yet we were able to have a nice discussion as equals, probably as God sees us. It was strange, having two officers ask to be addressed by their first names.
I made sure to ask the Ensign a few questions about what it's like. He started with the saying that the grass is always greener. He often feels jealous of the MSTs and BMs that get to go out on rescue missions or boardings, doing all the fun stuff, while he has to take care of logistics stuff. I have been worried that it might be like that for me if I commission too early.
He's even younger than me, having recently graduated from the Coast Guard Academy. There was talk of us going out to Subway after, but in the end he said he had to run. It's wierd, but I was a little nervous about having dinner with an officer, even though he was younger. Really, it was only a little. I still wanted to ask him questions about the duties of an ensign. Anyway, that's been my other fear about being an officer, is that there would be that barrier between me and the enlisted that are my age, especially those I graduated boot camp with.
Honestly, I wouldn't rat on a friend of mine as an officer for anything I wouldn't report them for as a seaman. But would they think that?
Well, that decision, if I ever even get the opportunity, is still a couple of years away.
