Who: Kagami and Mitsuru When: [SATURDAY | LATE NIGHT] Where: 2nd Floor Lounge Rating: G. Warnings: None? Summary: With Mitsuru, it was odd, but Kagami felt compelled to tell.
Kagami opened his eyes, slowly, and shook his head. He glanced again at his Mad Bull can and felt its exterior moistening against his skin, an effect of the air; absentmindedly, he felt the back of his mind tell him to open it soon, or else it would get warm.
“But November is cold,” he commented, and realized that it would probably sound abrupt and stupid, if Mitsuru heard just that, a silly complaint without context. But still, he tried to add another phrase, to make it sound it as if it were interrelated, “…It’s not a very good month.”
He paused. That, though an honest expression of his feelings, didn’t explain what he wanted to say at all…
Kagami grasped the softdrink can in his hands tighter, and tried to focus. He had to be more blunt about this than usual, he figured, else his mind would keep on wandering elsewhere.
He looked up at Mitsuru. Despite his apathetic expression and the thin frown on his face, he really was struggling to find the words to say. Sighing again, he decided to begin with,
“November is a cruel month... to Maya, Kirijou-sempai.”
Kagami's first words confused her, but she withheld from asking any questions, sure that he would offer an explanation for his words soon enough.
She hasn't really opened the can of tea either, and simply held it in her hand as she silently waited for Kagami to continue. She didn't think she should interrupt him.
Kagami glanced at Mitsuru; she was listening, and was waiting for him to continue. He sighed; a part of him had hoped she would just ask, because it would be easier to explain that way, but then another part of him knew that he should start from scratch. After all, it would be understood easier that way.
He sighed. Seriously, he muttured, "...Sorry, my head was a little messed up." He leaned back a bit, and put the can of Mad Bull beside him. "...Let me tell you correctly now."
The can emitted a soft thud as it came in contact with a cushion.
There was a thousand things he could say. The history of Maya's sickness had deeper roots than what he was about to tell, but then again, Kagami was never much for words.
So he kept it simple.
"Five years ago, around this time, Maya was eaten by a Shadow."
"But how is that possible...?" Mitsuru asked, after a long pause, not quite believing what she was hearing, but also didn't think that Kagami would lie. "Your sister is alive, and far from afflicted with apathy syndrome."
Kagami nodded. "That girl is strange," he said offhandedly, before returning to topic. "She was with our mother at the time. As it is in SEES's file, I'm sure you may have the idea that our mother is dying with the syndrome; she was eaten by the Shadow too."
He paused, and things began to clear up for him. Slowly, things unwound, and he told Mitsuru what he needed to.
"The exact date of this event is November 30th. Maya and my mother were running," he paused, and failed to mention from what, for it was not necessary. "The Dark Hour came. I presume Mother heard the Shadow's call, thus she was able to exist within the hour. Maya had the potential, and so..."
"I don't know how long Maya held up with the Shadow. Probably more than half an hour, if I estimated the clues correctly. It was unnerving; don't Shadows usually eat a person in less than a minute?"
"She was pushed against a wall, and it was consuming her slowly--by the time I reached her, I thought it would have been too late, because my mother was already on the floor."
"This is the first night I awakened my Persona. After I killed it, it was only logical to think that Maya would've been gone."
Kagami paused, and leaned back on the chair. "But she was fine. She just fainted, but when she woke up, there was nothing wrong with her besides the fact that she couldn't remember anything of the previous night."
Kagami hoped he hadn't told everything too quickly, but it was in his nature. He did not want to drag the story out, bit by bit, for it to become longer than he meant to.
Details were important, but he figured he could leave most out for this topic. After all, what was important was to let Mitsuru know what was about to happen this November.
"She was fine..." he trailed off, and glanced slightly at the Mad Bull can for no reason, before facing Mitsuru again, "...Hn, that's what I thought."
It was time to get to his main point.
"The year after this incident, as the month of November began... Maya suddenly got sick. She had convulsions of pain, severe headaches, unexplained bruises, and things of the like." Kagami didn't want to remember any of this, but, "It got worse as November went by. She'd have strange sicknesses that no one could heal."
"It went on like this for the rest of the month." Kagami pursed his mouth into a thin line, and half-whispered, "I... I thought she was dying. I couldn't do anything."
He berated himself then, as he realized what he said. He was talking too much.
Getting back to the topic, he continued, "But then... I found out that her illnesses would be gone by the end of the month. On December 1st, she'd be fine again."
Mitsuru could only imagine how it must be for Kagami to experience such an event...and how difficult it must be for him to revisit those memories and inform her of what might happen again.
She didn't want to make him feel more uncomfortable, but she felt that it was integral for her to ask...that was, if she was to attempt to find a way to help him and his sister.
"You say that it isn't without a cost...what is it?"
"November 30th," he mumbled, and gave his upperclassman a sort of empty stare. "That's the cost."
Pausing for a while, he then explained, "Usually, on that day, her symptoms draw to the worst. All the pain she experiences collects on that day, heightening to its peak--at least, that's what I've observed. Last year, she went mute... but nevermind that. Since she gets better the next day, her pain isn't so much the issue here anymore."
He looked at Mitsuru seriously. "On the Dark Hour that connects that day to the next, Maya disappears."
Kagami sighed. Feeling relieved that he was slowly getting to his final point, he allowed himself to relax his back on the throw pillow propped up behind him. "That stupid girl does it subconsciously, and I've never figured out why." He frowned. "She disappears and draws herself to the Shadows."
He clenched his fists.
"...And as if it were a repeat of that night, she lets herself be eaten."
"Is there a way we could prevent her from doing that?" She asked, which she later realzed, was probably a silly question. Considering how protective Kagami was towards his sister, if there was actually a method, then he probably would've already tried it.
Kagami shook his head. With a frown, he replied, "None that I know of." He'd already tried everything for the past years, but still this month went on as it was.
He really... hated it.
"I thought you should know all of this, Kirijou-sempai," he then began again, his tone no longer nervous nor lost, but blank and serious, "Because it is most likely, that on the night of the 30th, since we are in Iwatodai... Maya will go to Tartarus."
Kagami sighed. It was done, there wasn't really anything much more to say, he hoped.
Usually she would've offered to lend him the Kirijou group's resources, however, after learning about the human experiments those weeks before, Mitsuru didn't quite trust the Kirijou Group's scientists as she used to...and she didn't really want to worry Kagami about whatever tests his sister might have to go through either.
If Maya was going to go to Tartarus then...
"We'll follow her." she offered, feeling somewhat relieved that Kagami appeared to have regained his stoic composure "Whatever happens...I'll do whatever I can to help you and your sister."
"You're part of our team now, Tachibana, and by working as a team, I'm sure we'll find a solution to this."
