Susan walked into the Hufflepuff commons and feeling drained from classes. She set her books down by her feet and stood by a window. She looked out the window quietly and it was like she couldn't wait to go to window. She took a deep breathe and listened to the first years running around along with the other Hufflepuffs in the common room. She ( Read more... )

Ernie trotted into the common room, already thinking about running off to do some prefect runs and wondering which subject he should attempt to study while walking around this time. Sometimes it occured to him that he was perhaps stressing out about NEWTs too much, but he couldn't help it. It was his way.

He paused, however, when he saw Susan at the window. They hadn't actually had a proper conversation in a while, and he didn't actually have to go anywhere immediately. He checked his watch just to make sure, and when Ernie finally knew that the time was his, he went over to the window and stood next to her. "Good view?"

"Ahh!" She jumped and looked over to Ernie. She was just thinking of things and she wasn't exactly there. So when he came over and said something it scared her.

She couldn't remember when she last talked to Ernie. She felt like all of her friends were just to busy to talk to her. She never really says it to their faces though. "I was just looking. Yeah it's an okay view."

"If it's only okay, why are you looking at it?" he asked, leaning on the windowsill. "You deserve to be looking at something that's at least great. Don't shortchange yourself."

He wasn't really sure what kind of terms he and Susan were on anymore. They never really talked, and though he thought she was much recovered, Ernie was always slightly afraid of bringing something up that would pain her, even now, when he was only commenting on the view. "I suppose it's better than doing work, though."

She shrugged. "I'm fine with looking at okay things?" She looked to him and smiled lightly. "Shortchange myself? I'm not." She said softly without an attitude. She didn't think she was shortchanging herself.

"I hate doing homework. I need break." She still tried to be social and be friends with everyone. But when her friends appeared busy she never wanted to interrupt them.

"I'm sure there's something better to look at," Ernie stated again, but he didn't push it. There was no reason to if she was satisfied, yet he always liked to think that there was something better.

"Everyone does," he replied with a smile. "Prefect runs are becoming my breaks, that's how bad it's gotten recently. I hope you've at least fared better than that."

"Like what? What's better to look at?" She raised an eyebrow at him. She wondered what could possibly be better to be looking at.

"Do you ever...um not like being a Prefect? Like what do you not like about it? Surely there's something." She was trying so hard to make conversation. She usually had difficulty with it. "Yeah well I really don't like homework." She laughed at Ernie.

Ernie thought about it for a moment, not really sure exactly what the answer should be. He shrugged before replying "I don't know, really. The sun shining off of the lake while the squid's kind of visible? Something strange and beautiful, I would think."

He looked out the window, finding nothing much strange nor beautiful in the sight, and smiled a bit anyway. "I've never thought about it," Ernie simply replied. "It's just something that I felt like I had to do. And I do like it, most of the time. I just don't like it when people won't listen to me, I guess. It's infuriating."

She chuckled a bit. Especially when he was the one to tell her that he was sure there was something better to look at. She shook her head and calm down again and she stopped laughing.

"You just have to be assertive. And well if it's Slytherins it's because their Slytherins. They think they can do whatever and not listen." She nodded to him and looked around for a spot to sit down.

Ernie put his elbows on the windowsill and rested his chin on a hand, looking out at what he had deemed an unimpressive vista. "I'm plenty assertive, it's just that sometimes I feel like people aren't taking me seriously. And I am very serious about my prefecting. We're supposed to be helping keep order, you know?"

He pulled a face as he decided to comment on the Slytherins. "I try to deal with them as little as possible."

"Ohh I'm sure you are. I never wanted imply that you aren't assertive. I hope soon they can take you seriously before school is over." She smiled lightly as she was trying to be hopeful. She nodded to her house mate and she understood what he ment.

"Do they intimidate you? The Slytherins?"

"Thanks, Susan," he said with a wry sort of smile, "at least someone cares that I succeed in my duties."

Ernie didn't have to think much about her question. "Yes. They don't like authority, and they never will. I think Bulstrode actually beat Padma up once, while she was just trying to do her job. I never do really know what they'll do, and that isn't comforting."

"Welcome." She smiled lightly to him reached over pat his shoulder. "Yeah I try to care." She started laughing and looked to him. "No but really I do care." Ernie was her friend and her housemate, so naturally she did care of his succeeding in his prefect duties.

"Well yeah that's how Slytherins are. They just don't care.Bulstrode just beat up Padma? Yeah it sounds unsettling. Especially when their unpredictable." She hated the Slytherins. They made her uncomfortable and nervous of what they might do.
