As the flashes blinded us in the photobooth

Annie and I went used CD shopping again...which means I now have to listen to even more Steely Dan than before. But I bought a live Death Cab CD and though I realize I am fulfilling pretty much every stereotype you could ever make about me by listening to it, I am anyway.

Last night I went to Das Rheingold! I bought my ticket before the rest of the people in the music department because I didn't get it through the pre-college music office, so I didn't know that I was sitting in a different section--which turned out to be the second row of the orchestra. It was AMAZING. I'm sort of a little bit ashamed of having become a Wagner fan considering he was an awful megalomaniac and anti-Semite, etc. The Rhinemaidens were my favorite--they moved in this weird, stylized way, like they were swimming. In the very last scene, where the gods are ascending to Valhalla and the Rhinemaidens are morning the loss of the Rhinegold, they changed the lights so that the center of the stage only was lit up in weird blue light and the Rhinemaidens were singing their trio from offstage, the same as the beginning but in minor, and the gods were moving like they were being tortured until the big ball of light thing that was supposed to represent the gold lit up and began descending onto them and they all lay down, like inside the set, and that's how it ended. It was the most incredible scene--so weird. Erda was this fabulous big black contralto who blew the crowd kisses at curtain call. The only thing I really didn't like was Freia--she was really beautiful and had a great voice, but pretty much all she did was shriek "Save me! Help me!" and then twitch around like an electrocuted mouse and act like she was having incestuous relationships with her brothers.

After we got back, my friend Chris and I randomly explored Purnell, which is the drama building. It was very creepy in the dark. We went into a dance studio and rolled the piano around and then he broke into the faculty lounge and ate their watermelon. I don't really know why. Got back and was sexiled...but oh well. I was stuck out in the lounge, still all dressed up. Got my skirt all wrinkled.

Two more weeks here. I miss everyone back home.

Love,
Raberman
