Her heart beats quietly.
He can hear it, his head against her chest. She talks in her sleep about guns and trees. Her hair is long and whitish blond, almost like straw, and it falls over his fingers like water. She breathes and she lives, flesh and bone, red blood baked underneath pale skin. Her eyelashes are perfect and swirl upward toward the ceiling.
He's seen corpses look like this, like they were just sleeping, and so he keeps his fingers against her wrist just to make sure.
The clock ticks on the wall: tick, tick, tick.
Just making sure.
