Echoes of Bedlam

Preface: Fire and Ice

“Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.”
-Robert Frost, “Fire and Ice”

The worst part about it all is that Quinn -yes, that Quinn - is actually an intelligent person.

She isn’t stupid. She knows that she shouldn’t be doing this. She gets it. But there’s something so warm about his brown eyes, about his words (“Trust me.”), that they compel her to follow him down the path and into a secluded cove. She should be wary. She should march right back up to her house and continue on her way, and simply forget his existence. It would be the smart thing to do. She’s an intelligent girl.

But he’s such a beautiful, beautiful boy, and he utters such wonderful words, and she thinks that she should maybe take a chance on this. That maybe, with him, she can escape her life. Some part of her believes that, after this is over, he will take her away, take her somewhere far away from here (that will never be far enough).  But she will be away, and she will see the world, and she’ll be happy, and he’ll be right by her side.

As he gently pushes her down, as his coarse hands trace down her body through the fabric of her dress, she thinks that this maybe isn’t such a good idea. But his eyes are warm, and his smile is sweet, and she feels it. She can feel something blossom in her chest, something that rises and wells up in her throat as he slides off his shirt. She trembles as she touches his chest.

This is the beginning of her end.
