Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t answered the phone that night. It was late, almost time for Steven to come home. I assumed it was him when the phone rang; it wasn’t. Unless Steven could sound like a female conspiracy expert on crack cocaine and never mentioned it to me.
It was… quite the interesting conversation. I mentioned it to Steven when he finally did come home. That was (in retrospect) the second sign-when I mentioned that she had asked for him by name, he seemed… oddly defensive.
How could I not get suspicious at that? I admit, at first I thought he was cheating on me. Disappearing at odd hours, closing himself off to me, becoming defensive at questions… Every sign of infidelity short of catching him in bed with another person.
It went on for a few months like that, until I heard him on the phone with someone, reassuring them. I couldn’t help it-I listened in on the other phone. That’s when I heard it-You’ll get your fix. That call ended, and another took its place, this one arranging a time and place to pick up so many grams of-and this is when I had to hang up the phone-cocaine.
Steven, a police lieutenant, dealing drugs on the side? I was hurt that he was lying like that… and then upset. I did the only thing I could-confronted him. It was a bitter fight, and I ended with the ultimatum: Go turn yourself in, or I’ll do it for you.
That was when I was kidnapped and murdered. I admit, I still don’t recall all the details. I was home, then I was knocked unconscious. When I came to, it was in the middle of nowhere, at night.
That is where I died. Shot, in the middle of nowhere, at my fiancé’s order. Left for dead.
That was when Wilton Knight stepped in, and… here I am.
There’s a theory that a butterfly flapping its wings in China will cause a hurricane in Florida-or, more simply, that a small, seemingly innocent action will have life altering consequences somewhere along the line. Who knew that answering a phone would get me here?

Kitt reflecting on her life before she came to work for the Foundation. I kept the framework for Michael’s backstory and tweaked the fuck out of it.
Not too sure about now I feel about it. I don’t even know if she’s depressed or simply reflecting or what the fuck is going on. Oh well.
