You're No Richard Starkey... But Thank You - Knight Rider, Michael x KITT

Jun 17, 2011 18:37

"You did good, KITT," Michael complimented.

Michael, there's no need to sugar coat it, as they say. The voice coming from the Trans AM's vocal modulator was dripping with ice. I did wretchedly.

"I wouldn't say that," Michael began.

I would.

"Whoo, touchy," the human commented, fixing the vocal modulator with a stern look.

Michael, my poor performance nearly cost you your life, KITT pointed out archly. Need I remind you what my purpose is?

"Hey, a little creative problem solving got the problem fixed," Michael dismissed easily.

The Knight Industries Two Thousand does not do creative problem sol-

"KITT, you have a name," Michael cut him off. Whenever KITT started using his "full name," so to speak, he was going to be especially hard on himself and frankly, it was something Michael hated hearing. "Use it."

My purpose is to protect human life in general and your life particular, KITT reminded, not even touching Michael's statement.

"And you did that," Michael pointed out. "Look-I'm fine, KITT. See?"

Michael, that may work with children, but not with me. He sounded almost insulted.

Michael all but wilted against the seat. KITT was in one of those moods again-they were rare, only cropping up on the heels of a failure or a near failure, but when they did, he was moody and impossible to bring around. For a being that was not human, KITT was a professional at brooding for hours, sometimes days one end. "C'mon, KITT…" he tried again.

Michael, please don't take this the wrong way, KITT replied, but I'm really not in the mood to talk right now.

For a moment, all the human could do was blink at KITT's voice modulator. Was he really that worked up for a near miss…? Regardless, once KITT made up his mind, God help the poor sap who tried to get him to change it. "Okay, buddy," he conceded. "Take your time and we'll talk when you're ready."

He could only assume KITT's silence was an agreement; either way, he didn't try to coax the Trans AM into speaking, choosing to focus on the road… which was okay for a few miles before the silence got to be utterly maddening. "Hey, KITT, how about a little music?" he finally asked, reaching for the radio.

No reply from KITT, which Michael could only assume was a go-ahead. Almost warily, he turned on the radio, which flipped onto the last station he'd been listening to, a Top 40 something. KITT didn't react to it, but somehow Michael could still sense his disapproval; he started scanning the stations and eventually settled on a station that seemed to promise a mix of music.

They drove in silence, save the radio, for another mile or so before something Michael knew and actually liked came up, a familiar guitar intro, one that promised happiness in music form… which was probably something the Trans AM needed right now.

Not that Michael needed an excuse to sing along-

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright-

The drums he picked up and tapped out on KITT's steering wheel as he launched into the second verse. When he first started, his voice had been quiet, as if he were singing more to himself; now, he started to pick up volume.

Little darling,
It's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling
It feels like years since it's been here

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright.

The air inside the Trans AM was getting to be less tense. It was one of the strangest things to say out loud, unless it was to someone who knew said Trans AM's nature. The lessening tension made the next lines all the more appropriate-

Little darling
The smiling's returning to their faces
Little darling
It seems like years since it's been here

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright.

Michael, dare I ask what you're doing?

Well, at least KITT was talking, and the words were spoken with his almost trademarked curiosity, a tone of voice he only used when questioning Michael about one aspect of humanity or another. That was a good sign, Michael told himself as he replied, "Singing along, KITT."

…Dare I ask why? KITT questioned after a moment or two of thought. This is hardly your genre. It wasn't what the Trans AM would have chosen, but it was a step above what Michael normally listened to… Not that KITT would ever admit it.

"KITT, it's a feel-good song," Michael replied, tapping out the tempo. "It's a genre all by itself."

This exchange took them through most of the bridge (Sun, sun, sun / Here it comes, repeated five times), which Michael tapped out something that might have been the tempo, might have been the drums on the steering wheel again.

Little darling
I feel that ice is slowly melting-

With an affectionate smile, Michael reached over and brushed his thumb against KITT's vocal modulator without losing a beat of the song. KITT gave no verbal reply to this, and Michael didn't address it before carrying on the tune.

Little darling
It seems like years since it's been clear

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright-

KITT shut off the radio, which made a sort of muted click. "Am I really that bad?" Michael teased.

"Well, you're no Richard Starkey, KITT replied honestly. …Or John Lennon, Paul McCartney or George Harrison.

"Critic," Michael replied. The words didn't bother him in the least.

KITT's next words were much quieter: … Thank you Michael.

The human smiled and brushed his thumb over KITT's voice modulator again. "You're welcome, Sunshine."

KITT didn't comment on the name, but it was clear to both parties that he enjoyed the affectionate address.

Thought up while up late IMing and listening to iTunes on shuffle. Truthfully, this is a ninja plot bunny that kinda came out of nowhere, so I really don’t remember where the hell it came from. I think it was just because this song is obscenely happy and I had Michael x KITT on the brain (as always). Finished this afternoon because I was pissed off and fucking felt like it.

The Beatles and Knight Rider. Yes. This. I want more of it. I’ll probably have to do it myself but whatever.
