Review: Wizard's Run

Wizard's Run is an old school shooter (with a feel similar to River Raid on the Atari 2600) together with new school tech trees (again I am with the irresistibe tech trees.) You play a wizard and can level up and shoot spells at bad guys that come from the top of the screen. As you level, you pick new spells and/or passive abilities and that's about it.

I like that the feel of the game is right. I like the 8 bit nostalgia factor. I like the types of enemy movements and attacks. I love the fact that it's short (if you just run through once, I've done it three times so far.)

Stil I have issues:

1. Needs a higher level cap. You really can't try out some of the more interesting builds since there aren't enough points to spread amongst three different trees. Since the game is fairly easy to win, it wouldn't hurt to allow you to get more powerful, but it would be really fun to see some interesting combinations.

2. Needs a respec option. I played through three times to test out the first three builds I planned, and it really would have been nicer to be able to keep testing with one run through (especially for those of us with time constraints.) If he wanted to penalize respecing he could have allowed a respec at a cost of dropping two levels. This way you get to play through the more exciting levels again to get back up.

3. Needs more save game slots. For those of us willing to play through many times, we should at least be able to keep our different characters. It sucks to erase a max level character just to test something out.

4. Minor balance issues. Fire is a bit more powerful than the other trees, but this could be fixed by just altering the base cost and effect of the spells in the other trees slightly. You can win with all three trees (I did) but a small boost to the base spells (not the passive skills) of the other trees would be good.

I can imagine a lot of people disliking this game. Despite all of the problems I've just mentioned, I loved it. It kept me thoroughly entertained for a couple hours, and I'm back on with my life.  Best flash game I've played in a long time.

...and I forgot the link to it.  Here.
