possible letter to new times

i just wrote this letter, still want to edit it a little, but you get the picture....

As many other Brophy and Xavier students have been writing to you to express their outrage about the article released about Jarrett Maupin II, I must also because the inconsistencies and flaws in this article are too glaring to ignore. Although I must admit I did not know Jarrett, I can discuss the inaccuracy of many of the claims of racism Jarrett makes in regards to Brophy and Xavier. Brophy and Xavier are well known for their community service around the entire Valley. In addition to Brophy’s many charity drives including the Turkey Drive and Elph drive, Xavier has a canned food drive and donates at least 25,000 cans every year as a result of the generosity of Xavier Students. Furthermore, both Brophy and Xavier, have many clubs celebrating diversity such as the Unity and Diversity Club, as well as programs such as Gatortown, and many service clubs such as Key Club, Students for Social Action, Amnesty International, St. Agnes, Loyola Project, and many more that could be included, but the list would simply be too long.
In regards to the false accusation that a security guard at Xavier made racist remarks at a school dance, I would like to point out that there is only one school dance at Xavier where you might be able to buy tickets at the door, the back to school dance. Furthermore, Xavier and Brophy faculty, not janitors chaperone the dance. Furthermore, there is no ticket booth at Xavier, simply a folding table where faculty sell the tickets. I can assure you, NO Xavier Faculty would ever let any racist comments be said by anyone, and the implication that a janitor, many of whom are minorities themselves, would say a racist comment is extremely offensive considering Xavier’s Catholic values. The statement that Brophy is, “notorious for its low representation of minorities” is completely flawed and ridiculous to even accuse Brophy of. I would be extremely interested to see what percent of students that apply to Brophy are minorities, as well as have Brophy show how many scholarships they give to students, including minorities. The mothers of these so called ‘racist’ Brophy students in fact spend hundreds of hours every year organizing events whose proceeds go directly to the scholarship fund. I am disgusted by the accusations that were made in this article, and challenge any staff member at the New Times, a magazine I used to respect for its writing, to find two schools that do more for the community, spend as much money on scholarships for students, or who truly do display the “Man for Others” Jesuit philosophy that Brophy displays so well.
