Not to pat my own back, but I'm going to take this opportunity to pat my own back:
I was getting gas the other day when this girl at the pump next to me said something to me before I got in my car... I didn't understand, so I said, "Sorry?" and then the following exchange happened in Spanish:
Girl: "Oh. You speak Spanish?"
Me: "A little. You need help?"
Girl: "Yes. My car won't start. It's the battery."
Me: "Ohh. Do you need some cables?"
Girl: "No, I've got them."
Me: "No problem, just a minute..."
Then I back up and nose up to her car, pop the hoods, and we continue...
Me: The same thing happened to my car about two weeks ago.
Girl: How nasty, huh?
Me: Yeah.. Okay. I think it'll be good.."
*starts car*
Girl: Thank you very much."
Me: No problem : )
Then we made out.
Joking. But the rest happened. I had no idea having a dozen Mexican teachers at work every day would actually teach me to speak Spanish, even if in a basic way. Who knew?
This now makes me want to learn Swahili, German and French. At least.
