It was intended as a kid's book, I know that. But regardless of audience, or perhaps, especially, because of audience, one should never write down to one's audience. My problem with Harry Potter ( apart form the millions of non-book-reading people who won't read anything in any way well written or actually enlightening or uplifting but will go berzerk over a series of oh so 1950's English books featuring a young male magician) is that it's just too cloying and cutesy. J K Rowling has some nice ideas, some well done pieces of character interaction, but the overall Harry Potter Milieu is one of modern Britain strained through Enid Blyton and coming out somewhat soggy at the end of it.
There are some nice scenes and some good ideas but it's like a cake with dreadful icing; it can be hard to stick around to get to the heart of the affair.
