Success! It turns out that you can't register on the Steam website, but they never bothered to take down the b0rked sign-up page. You have to do it through the client.
Anyway! I got a Steam account. Since everything else I wanted was taken I dipped into the names of my DnD characters so my account name is "Khtall". Add away. I've got TF2 now (the whole Orange Box actually) and might (might) get L4D later.
