Not a review, although I actually pretty much loved the episode (and surprise surprise, it had nothing to do with the ending Clois scene). But I was on the SHoE site (I miss it when it wasn't a bunch of teenagery fanboys) and someone mentioned that they thought Clark was going to give Lois that (tacky, my words) Kawatche bracelet, but it turned out to be
Virgil Swann's journal. They went on to say how it would be "cool" if he did eventually give her the bracelet. I had this to say:
I actually think him giving her the journal is much more original and actually more romantic than the bracelet. For one thing, he’s never thought to give that journal to anyone else. For another, he gave it to her with the notion that he wants her to know him “completely”. This is the first relationship, outside of his parents, where Clark has been able to fully be himself. Even when he and Lana were together in Season 7, Clark was still trying to be “normal” for her, but with Lois (and this is consistent from the time Lois first showed up in/on Smallville) he loves feeling “special” for her. He’s always tried to get Lois to see him as something other than a dorky farmboy, because that’s all Lois saw, which was new to him because everyone else in his life (Lex, Lana, and Chloe) always wanted to know what he was hiding. And because of that he hid even further from them until they learned the truth.
But with Lois, she didn’t see anything special, so he’s always subconsciously wanted to impress her (i.e. asking her opinion about his letterman’s jacket, his jealousy about A.C. because she saw HIM as a hero, in Crimson when she got distracted about Ollie being Green Arrow…not one time on Red-K did Clark ever try to let Lana know what he was hiding).
So yeah, I know that bracelet has been on his mind to give to Lana when he first got it in Skinwalker, but that journal is so much more personal. The bracelet is superficial, like giving a girl your class ring, but that journal is everything Lois would need to know not just about Clark, but how to help and probably even how to stop him if he got out of control…Dude, that’s a lot of trust to put in someone, to give them the means to stop you. It’s like when Clark will eventually give Bruce the Green-K ring. So what Clark has essentially done is give Lois the SV equivalent to the Green-K ring and access to the Fortress. That’s love, baby.
