Confession time: This was never one of my favorite episodes (I'm typing this even before I've started the dvd). Let's see if my opinion of it has changed.
Episode 16: Stray (part III)itasheeJune 9 2010, 13:59:47 UTC
//Ryan can "hear" his stepfather is near and takes off. He's hiding in a dumpster and is nearly crushed by the truck when Clark saves him...surrounded by a halo of light.//
From the Official Companion 1: In an early version of the script, it was explained that Clark repaired the side of the garbage truck after he had rescued Ryan, unfortunately, the scene was cut.
// Oh Sylvester Pemberton, I'm ashamed.//
LOL!
//But this scene between them is so sweet and Ryan just breaks your heart as he tells Clark about what his stepparents did to him. Ryan tells Clark that he's the only one that can keep him safe. *squishes them both* Okay, so what really breaks my heart about this episode is what happens in Season 2, but this is one of those times I wish they could've broken from canon because it was so great to see Clark as a big brother to someone, to have this kid look up to him the way he did. I do love that we had confirmation in "Ryan" that they kept in touch, I just wish it could've lasted longer.//
Ryan: You don't understand what it's like to be different. What it's like to have to hide so people won't think you're a freak. Everywhere I go, I hear people's thoughts. I can't block it out anymore.
Poor Ryan…
Ryan: I was hoping I could start over with your family. They were so nice. I wanted them to adopt me like they did you. So I'd be safe. Clark: Who's chasing you? Ryan: My stepfather and his new wife. They’ve been using me…My abilities. To steal. I wanted to stop but they threatened me. They hit me. You have to protect me, Clark. You're the only one that can.
This scene totally broke my heart…T_T
//Conclusions: I continue to adore this episode to pieces. Superman has a special affect on children, and this was the first indication of that affect that we've gotten on Smallville. It's all thanks to the wonderful chemistry that TW has with kids; it's like he brings the best out of their performance, or they bring that wonderful father/big brother vibe out of him..//
I totally agree.
*My favourite moment of the episode:
Ryan: (gives Clark his collection of WA comic books): I want you to have something. Clark: I can't take those. Ryan: I don't need them anymore. I have you.
*The “TITLE OF THE BIGGEST S.O.B” in Stray: Goes to Ryan’s stepfather for his overall performance.

I remember loving this episode instantly when I first watched it. Ryan was a sweetheart and I adored his scenes with Clark, and then I fell in love with Clark all over again. It breaks my heart that they didn't get more time together, but in my own personal canon, Clark and Lois name their first son after Ryan. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I think Ryan's stepfather might even be worse than Lionel in this episode.
