Confession time: This was never one of my favorite episodes (I'm typing this even before I've started the dvd). Let's see if my opinion of it has changed.
Episode 15: Nicodemus (part II)itasheeJune 6 2010, 10:55:30 UTC
// When she gets to school, she's dressed very un-Lana-like. This actually makes more sense in her desire to break out of the mold she's been put in. To tell the truth, her outfit is pretty tame. She's wearing black, yes, because her trademark color up to this point has been pink, but it's the too much makeup and change in hair (and red lacy underwear, apparently) that makes her look trampy.//
*This is what Kristin Kreuk said about her role in Nicodemus:
-Kristin enjoyed the opportunities presented in the first season for Lana to be a little different. “The scene in X-Ray where I played Tina Greer with Whitney in the hallway was so much fun to do,” she recalls. “That was so not what Lana is normally like - she was sexy and manipulative - and when the producers saw that, they decided to write ‘Nicodemus’ for me.” (The Official Companion1)
-about Nicodemus: “I was thrilled by that episode, because it gave me an opportunity to do something new.” However, although she was happy to participate in the stuntwork involved in the episode, she very firmly made it clear to the producers that she was not prepared to wear sexy lingerie that the scene in the swimming pool called for. “I just didn’t think it was appropriate, and I didn’t think red lace underwear was really appropriate for a fifteen-year-old-girl.” (The Official Companion1)
Well, I’d like to say “BRAVO!” to Kirsten for sticking to her convictions! :)
*Kristin about Lana’s evolution during season 1:
The actress believes that Lana’s character evolution seriously began in X-Ray, when she realized that the image that she had of her parents might not necessarily be the case. When she hears her mother’s cutting graduation speech, she realizes that her mother wasn’t who she had believed. “She has this fantasy in her head of what her mom was like, and she wants to be like that. Lana grew up with her aunt Nell, who I’ve always pictured as somebody who was very materialistic. She was very concerned about appearances. She’d tell Lana that she had to look this way, and do things a certain way so that people thought good things about her. So Lana grew up thinking that this was what she had to do, and what she had to be.” (The Official Companion1)
Oh, and btw - I had really hard time watching Clark and Lana scenes when she was trying to seduce him (those were the “MOST CRINGE -WORTHY” MOMENTS of the episode for me - ugh…@_@)
// The only part of this episode I didn't care much for was the Lana aspect. Not because it's Lana, but because I have an embarassment squick and what she did while infected was pretty embarassing (the makeup alone was cring-worthy). //

I really appreciate Kristen for her view on the lingerie because it was INCREDIBLY inappropriate to show this 15-year-old girl in her underwear even if the actress is 18.
Funny enough I thought it was INCREDIBLY APPROPRIATE to show Clark shirtless coming out of the showers, lol.

That scene was cringeworthy, but I think part of it is that for me the sexual chemistry wasn't there yet. Tom and Kristen definitely got better over the years, but in the beginning I felt the friendship chemistry way more than the romantic. It was the lack of UST, probably. There were times where Clark and Lana did work (like the beginning of Season 5, I was actually happy for them until post Hidden), but at the same time I never got the feeling that they want to jump each other's bones. It wasn't like how it was clearly obvious how women like Alicia or Lois made Clark horny (and with Lois in Season 9, it seemed like Clark was thinking about jumping her ALL THE TIME). I don't doubt that Clark wanted to sleep with Lana, but he seemed to be content not to (for the rest of his life, apparently), whereas Clark went out of his way in some episodes to try to get Lois in bed, lol (I'm thinking Disciple, Escape, Upgrade, and Charade in particular).

Personally, I’m not so sure if Clark was thinking about sleeping with Lois in Disciple…I think he definitely wanted to make out with her, get closer to her or simply spend more time with her - but sex…I don’t think sex was on his mind when he said “You know, Lois, we could go back to the farm and take a walk. I could give you Clark Kent's tour of the galaxy” (lets remember that Lois was counting their PDAs - they were barely touching each other! And Clark had to steal Lois’s kiss!).
I don’t mean to say that Clark wasn’t ready to have sex with Lois in Disciple - I’m just saying that (in my opinion) Clark (who is a romantic, interested in astronomy) literally wanted to give Lois a tour of the night sky = stargazing - lol! which is totally in character for Clark, btw..
“Clark Kent's tour of the galaxy” can have a double meaning, I guess…
