Episode 9: Rogue (part I) itashee May 28 2010, 16:54:45 UTC
There were two major things that I remembered about this episode (before I watched it again):

1) The scene where Clark and Lex are admiring a bejewelled breastplate of Alexander the Great.
2) The moment when Clark is stopping the out of control bus in Metropolis.

To be honest, I’m really glad that I decided to watch Rouge again - because it made me appreciate this episode more. There were so many great moments that I liked about this episode of Smallville - mostly it were the Kent family scenes (I’m planning to pay special attention to them).

Also, I’d like to say that I really loved your review, Natasha!*_* It was very insightful and I enjoyed reading it :)

*This is what the official companion says about the episode:

I. “It was fun to play with the hero who makes teenage mistakes and puts his own family in jeopardy,” writer Mark Verheiden notes. “’Rouge’ was very difficult for us to figure out, but we all felt that it was a good change-up for us, because it showed that we could do non-Freak of the Week episodes and do more emotional stories.”

II. “It was one of the first really mature storylines,” Kristin Kreuk comments. “It was more adult-based than teenager-based. It’s probably because it’s the first story set in Metropolis and when Clark’s anger came out, it gave him a lot more depth and layers.”

III. “’Rouge’ was our first total true crime story,” Miles Millar explains. “It was one of the episodes where everything really came together well. The casting was really good, the story was really good, the director was great, and we had a phenomenal opening sequence with the bus. It was also the first episode that Bob Hargrove, who became our line producer, was in charge of. Things were beginning to click.”

IV. According to Paul Simpson: “for the first time there were extensive scenes in Metropolis. In DC Comics continuity, Metropolis often looks like a much sunnier and brighter place, compared to grim Gotham City. “Our Metropolis is definitely not sunny Smallville,” Millar says. “It’s much more metallic and modern, and it always has an urban edge. The colours are different as well - we use much more silver and black. Where Smallville is saturated with colour, Metropolis is monochromatic. It gives a different feel, and it’s definitely darker than [director] Richard Donner’s version in the 1978 Superman movie.”

I'm glad you're enjoying the reviews because I enjoy doing them :D

There are quite a few Season 1 eps that show that potential for Smallville to be really great, and Rogue is one of them.

That's really interesting what they said about Smallville/Metropolis/Gotham.

Yeah! I also found it interesting. I think one of the reasons why I like the Companion books so much (although they are not perfect and could be improved) is that I have an official source of information and I can learn more about Smallville…

I have 6 Companions (except for season 3 - I just couldn’t find it anywhere). I bought them this year because I was planning to do the series rewatch and I wanted to have some background information (it’s always interesting to find out sth new about this show).

It’s a great pity that there are no plans to publish season 8, 9 and 10 companions…
It would be really nice to get some answers about season 8 - especially the Lana ARC, and why the producers thought it was a great idea to end the relationship between Clark and Lana in such a tragic way. When I learnt that Lana was returning for 5 episodes, I thought it was a perfect opportunity for Clana closure. You know, for example Clark saying to Lana something similar to what Lois said to Oliver in Crossfire “I love you, as a dear friend” - but nooooo…The producers had decided to bring more Clana drama to Smallville - it was just so disappointing and painful to watch…
After Super-Powered-Krypto-Infected Lana left - I lost faith in TPTB…
I wasn’t sure if they were able to do justice to Clois romance....
But thank God for season 9! :)

To be honest, I’d like to see Lana coming back for one episode in season 10. I’d be fine with her return (for an episode) if TPTB showed her without her super-suit and being happy with her life…I really didn’t like what the writers and producers did with her story in season 8 - it was tragic and (in my opinion) unnecessary.
