CT 75.1: How do you respond when someone shows a romantic interest in your partner?

Aug 04, 2009 20:50

Claire isn't allowed to respond when other women show an interest in Sam.

Sometimes it happens when he's in the bar, and she's too busy serving drinks to pay too much attention. She likes it best when it happens there, because usually by the time she finishes serving a table, he has politely rejected the interested party. It doesn't take him long, and he's always firm in his apologies; he's flirted, but he has a girlfriend. He's careful not to mention her by name, or job, or anything beyond her relationship to him.

She has a harder time with it when girls come up to him while he's working a case. He rarely lets her go on the actual hunt with him, but if she isn't working, she goes along and helps him collect information. Research for Sam isn't always dusty old books and the internet - unfortunately, he does a lot of covert interrogating. There's a secret agent badge for every situation imaginable, complete with a rock star name and cool job. She knows Sam doesn't like doing it, especially not alone, so sometimes she helps.

Claire always plays his partner instead of his girlfriend, and they usually end up pretending to be professional. He never lets her help when he's playing a government agent. They both know that she's too young for that to be convincing, even if she does have the rest of it down. When he does need her, she's the rookie, the intern, or the boss's daughter. The looks they get when they walk around their neighborhood are bad enough. He's eight years older than she is, and fifteen inches taller. To anyone else, her relationship with Sam sounds as weird as the rest of her life. She doesn't understand it, because they make perfect sense to her.

When Sam goes hunting on his own, the last thing Claire is worried about is some girl hitting on him in a bar. She knows that if he wanted to take any of them up on their offers, he wouldn't keep coming home to her. They trust each other. And if she doesn't have to see it, she doesn't have to worry about Sam deciding that it would be simpler to be with a normal woman, instead of someone who has to hide because of her ability. If anyone involved with the government ever found out he was still alive, he'd be in twice as much trouble just for being connected to her. She worries about him getting hurt and not being able to call her, or getting captured and not being able to break out.

She doesn't like the attention he gets anymore than he likes the attention she gets, but they both know that they both live with it. There are times when wishing she could push the skank away is almost as satisfying as actually doing it. Almost.
