Summary: In which Derek Hale meets Stiles Stilinski and life gets complicated.

Derek was fifteen when he first met Stiles, the day after the fire.
He had left Laura in the station to talk to the sheriff and the fire chief, who were trying to sort out exactly what had happened. Derek had felt trapped, almost claustrophobic, so he had escaped outside and was sitting on the front steps of the sheriff’s station, trying to just breathe.
He felt bad about leaving Laura alone in there - his sister was only seventeen - but Derek couldn’t handle any more questions, didn’t want to talk about how he and Laura and Uncle Peter had been the only ones who had survived, the rest of their family now gone.
“You can’t lurk here, lurker,” a voice suddenly said.
Derek looked up to see a kid coming up the steps. He had big amber eyes and slightly crooked teeth and was wearing a baseball cap backwards on his head.
“Why not?” asked Derek.
“Uh, police station?” the kid elaborated, gesturing wildly with his arms.
Derek shrugged. It wasn’t any of this kid’s business what Derek was doing here.
“So, what?” the kid said in answer. “You waiting on some creepy uncle to make bail or something?”
Derek didn’t tell the kid that his ‘creepy uncle’ was in a coma at the hospital with half of his face burnt off. The kid couldn’t have been more than ten.
The kid continued to eye Derek with interest, his shrewd-for-a-ten-year-old gaze only breaking when someone called from the station door behind them. “Stiles?”
The kid shot a glance over Derek’s shoulder. “Oh hey, gotta go,” he said. “ That’s my dad. He’s the sheriff.” He gave Derek a goofy grin then climbed the steps. “See ya, creeper.”
Derek didn’t know it then, of course, but that was the moment his life became very complicated.

Summary: Stiles is dead, killed by a witch with a score to settle. Or so, that’s what his friends believe. And the strangest thing of all is that Derek is the one taking Stiles’ death the hardest.
