Doggy Recipes!

Since I have had a few people ask me what was in Sawyer's b-day cake I am officially posting the recipe here! I based it on a recipe I found online and modified. It was a big hit with the dogs (granted they are perhaps not at picky as say a human might be... after all, I have caught Sawyer eating poo before).

Garlic Chicken Layered Doggie Cake

Ingredients:
1 chicken stock cube
1 cup whole-wheat flour 2 cups wheat germ, (save some for flouring pan )
1/2 cup cornmeal
2 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 cups water Garlic-flavored vegetable-oil spray
1 cup plain yogurt (add your choice of food coloring as desired)
Bacon Bits
Doggy jerky

Preheat oven to 375F/185C - Gas Mark 5
Method: Dissolve stock cube in warm water. Combine flour, wheat germ, cornmeal, eggs, oil, garlic and water. Spray two cake pans with garlic-flavored oil, and sprinkle with flour. Bake for 50 minutes. After removing dog birthday cake from oven, turn upside down and let cool. Makes two small cakes.

Frosting:  Put one of the cakes on a plate and put yogurt on top of it (this will be the middle layer filling).  Place top layer of cake on lower layer and cover cake in the remaining yogurt (add more as needed).  Then sprinkle on bacon bits and put on doggy jerky for "candles"

I also made him and his doggy friends homemade doggy biscuits which he was also a big fan of.  Here is the recipe for those as well!

Sawyer's Peanut Butter Doggie Biscuits

Ingredients:
3 tbsp. peanut butter
1/2 cup oil
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 1/2 cups water
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup fine cornmeal

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Beat together peanut butter and eggs. Gradually beat in oil and water until well-mixed.
  3. In a separate bowl, thoroughly combine flour, oats, and cornmeal.
  4. Add the flour mixture to the peanut butter mixture and blend well to form a dough.
  5. Roll out the dough to approx. 1/4" thickness and cut into shapes, or just slice them into squares if you don't have cookie cutters.
  6. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet, leaving about 1/2 inch between biscuits. Bake for 20 minutes until browned. Turn off oven, but leave the biscuits inside to "crisp". Once the biscuits have hardened, remove them and treat your dogs! Store the remaining biscuits in an airtight container.
