the cat

So I took the cat, Shadow, to the vet today/this morning after horseback riding lesson.  He had been sluggish and not himself and unsteady on his feet.  Yeah, he's 18, only has 3 legs, but there are some things that just aren't normal...
So when I got him there he had peed on himself in the carrier.  He never does that.  He has been really really quiet lately...which is also so not like him and his mouthy self(part Siamese).  He has lost more weight..he weighs a total of 6 pounds.  This is less than last week. And he's dehydrated.  So now comes the blood work.  The vet wanted him to stay for 24 hours for re-hydration and tests.  She said she'd call as soon as the results were done, about 30 minutes or so.
I went off to lunch.  She had hoped it was hyperthyroidism or something equally as treatable.   Results were that he is in almost complete kidney failure.  His phosphorous levels are at  a 15.9 out of 16.  High normal is 7 out of 16.  So the vet wants to keep him for 48 hours, give him fluids to flush his kidneys and re-test on Thursday. If he responds to treatment then we will go from there.   He is not in pain.  He has eaten something now that he is better hydrated.  Thats a good sign.  So we will make a better determination based on Thursday's test results.
