So I figured I would update since apparently my last update was two weeks ago; and even then I'm sure there wasn't much of an update as much as me just being bored and posting some random video. I need to stop doing that video nonsense, but there are just times when I want to remember the video... although "What what... in the butt" might still get posted.
So I'm here downtown doing my first rotation with Rickettsia, and if I spelled that word right it's a miracle. So, as mentioned before, I'm doing the summer bridge for Meyerhoff Graduate Fellows. Which reminds me, I have a check to pick up this Friday. I've been keeping busy purifying protein [I feel like I"m in Summers lab all over again]. Plus we've started our damn technical writing workshop which requires TOO much writing for NO credit. I thought we would at most read some things and discuss it in class. But no, we have exercises, we just finished or are about to finish up this "News and Reviews" article bullshit (which is funny because we're supposed to have our rough's up for peer review so that we can discuss in our conference of which the last ones are today and there's a total of four, not including mine, posted). The only decent thing about that class is the fact that it uses a Wiki. So we post on there and we're required to have a laptop for class so that we can access it during class. Minus the fact that EVERYONE'S just surfing the web half the time. Sometimes people are good and they won't be typing when they don't have to. But yesterday, the server went down and there was NO reason for people to be typing and NO reason for them to be looking at their screens so intently... but we did anyway :p. I really wish I could get out of the class, if not for work than for my sanity.
The class is fucking up my work schedule. I would have had some serious protein purified by now but I had some bad stomach crap the week before classes started. So by the time I returned a week later I was in the midst of bullshitery and barely had time to get work done except on days w/o classes, Wed and Frid. I was going to try and come in early and stuff and be a good lab rat but my P.I. even said there's no point and to just come in when my post docs here. Now, first it was an issue because this is supposed to be my last week, so I pushed myself to next week too and maybe a little bit during orientation. But it's the worst timing because my postdoc's trying to get some vacation time. I don't blame him, and I don't mind. But I know my PI will be looking for that purified protein which won't be there most likely. That's alright, I'll probably just pass the work onto some Ville Julie kids where are coming when the semester begins. I was offered to come back and do my thesis on what I'm basically doing now and the future implications but I don't want to hold up the research for a potential "MAYBE" a couple years down the line. I'll see I suppose.
Now mind you it's difficult to type with long nails... and a sore wrist from the hike. Oh, yes the hike. So there's an annual retreat for the Meyerhoff thing and this year was hiking [previous year it was white water rafting, they alternate, but we had a 'conference' thing and we may consider different alternatives] So I decide to ride down with Mrs. Johnson [yeah the one from undergrad Meyerhoff who left to do the Grad stuff] just to make it easy. So that was a little uneasy because it was mostly older M's who really knew each other so I'm in the back of the van like..yeah. So we get there and it's the Bavarian Inn in WV, you can google it and see. It's German themed and everything [to the point in the room service menu you can get a meal with like 6 different sausages and sauerkraut... and that's it]. So I knew before hand they would be a bit prissy because they weren't working with Justine at all when she was calling to make all the reservations. They seemed pretty nice when we were checking in but I think that's because it was a big ass band of black people and they kind of freaked and decided to be extra nice (which reminds me, everytime we were on the road we played 'count the black people'... we found one). So we're sharing rooms with one roommate and when I was looking at the site I was wondering why every picture had ONE bed and a sofa... hmm, I thought, they must have DOUBLE room. NO. It's a bed and a sleeper sofa. Luckily for me, my rooommate was real cool and nice (we got along real well) and she took the sofa.
So Friday night we have a little conference thing discussing how to improve the program after we learn we probably won't have a huge budget cut afterall. Dinner was good and mmm cheese [although god I was gassy]. My roommate and I passed out watching tv and I woke up around 3 listening to some infomercial selling Soul music. Wake up ASS early the next day for breakfast and to get ready for the hike. Dr. Summers is silly and talking about how we should have been up early to go bike riding (although I wouldn't do it unless I was paid because he's a little hardcore about that). Dinner's good and hilarious, especially since everyone stayed asking for bread and "shots" of juice [seriously the juice glasses were little bigger than a shot glass, we were upset]. Afterwards we grab our "box lunches" (literally, it was a damn box with subway sandwich, apple, cookies, chips, and water inside) and head off carpooling down to Harper's Ferry. We start on our hike after we take a shuttle off and I already know this is a bad idea. I DO NOT work out. So yeah. We reached a little less than half and I was hoping to have an out-of-body experience. It's been a long time since I've sweat so hard doing something unfun. So after that I stuck behind with the people I rode up with and my roommate. Somehow I made it up by some kind of miracle. We had lunch on a big ass rock (if you look on facebook I'm tagged in the pic) and climbed down. By the end of that my carmmates and I were ready to evacuate since we couldn't use our legs worth shit. At the hotel I borrowed a swimsuit, dunked in the dirty pool (ew pools) and then passed out watching tv with roomie again while we both writhed in pain. Dinner was later that night and was hilarious (our waiter called liquor 'liveations' yeah) until Justine told use to literally use 'our inside voices'. after that we were ready to leave since it was around 9. I left with my roommate since we were both bored and it was only 1.5 hours away. Justine got upset because everyone was leaving for the same reason although the room was paid for 2 nights... although I DID use the room all day. If I didn't shower after that hike that would have been sick (my clothes were soaked). But whatever. Made it back safely and whatnot.
So that's my life right now I suppose. Real anxious about starting classes on the 27th. I have to try and move into my place somehow this weekend while furniture shopping. Poop. My wrist hurts... I'm done.
