You are who you are and you would stand up for yourself no matter what. It is innate. Pride is innate. Self-preservation is base; it always has been there and always will be there.
It is funny that if we change what we currently define ourselves to be, we will fight for something completely different than we used to stand up for. Thus negating the relevance of the previous action.
I am who I am right now but if my life had been altered in any way I would cease to be the person that I am and therefore would not exist so this fundamental pride and sense of worth is only based on the actions and environment that in the beginning we are forced to accept and later that which we choose to accept.
If you had been born in a different place to different parents, in a different era, in a different society, in a religion. If you went to a different school, if you had different music, if you had different friends, if you had died you would be different. (Let that sink) Okay, it might be hokey, but seriously we hat and fight so much for so little. We cling because we are scared. And we refuse to let go. We say we have, but we don’t.
Perhaps genius, something of worth, enlightenment, stardom, can’t be reached unless you let go a little, but those that feel truly free are almost always corrupted by the addiction to what made them transcend the “norm”. Those that made or can make a true difference because of their influence cannot control. Power is truly the most addictive substance known to man.
The true enlightenment comes when we accept that the past has happened and lean what was and derive a path from that point and follow it until, possibly in the next instant the course is changed again. Anyone who has lived their life on a straight line possibly has lived their life to the fullest, but I say how can you truly know that the path you are on is the path that you should take?

People get upset because the look for an answer and there is no definite answer. So some people give up looking and forget. Others are tormented. Others find an easy way. But for us to really be alive and to choose, the answer must not be obvious. Then we only TRUELY have free will.
