When it was tape, the source tape determined some of the order, at least if there was more than one tune to be dubbed from the source tape. Many tapes I built up not a specific mixes, but as things dubbed off of the Dr. Demento Show and considered good enough to keep (Fast Forward was often a good friend indeed - much was crap, but there were some gems.). These would then get assembled into drive-time tapes (yeah, third generation, but consider the listening space of a car - high fidelity doesn't matter that much when there's wind, road, and engine noise). I never really worked out great timing to merge things well enough to avoid an odd dead space at the end of each side of the tape -- but that dead space was preferable to having a tune cut off only to restart, from the beginning, on the opposite side
