Was reading a friend's livejournal today (all names, including that of my friend who has nothing to do with this and who I know is tres smart, are removed out of pity for the parties involved) and a reply came to her rather ordinary post by someone I know she doesn't know saying, to the effect of:
From: [spammername]
Friend me!!! Please!!!
You must do it here or here.
Just do it!
The "here"s are individual links to add a friend, but not the spammer nick but two individually different ones. Biggest alarm bell this guy is a spammer. Out of morbid curiosity/boredom, I visited spammer's page (not the dopplegangers') and saw the only post was in Russian (or at least another Slavic language that uses the Cyrillic alphabet):
очень вас прошу
зафрендите меня пожалуйста!
вы можете это сделать здесь или здесь
My very basic knowledge of the language tells me his post is basically saying the same thing except in Russian (or whatever, but I'll call it Russian) Followed are 18 (as of my visit) replies, most of them are in Russian, but a few are English-speaking folk, a few of them naive gullible people that remind me why the people who send out obvious spam still do what they do (such replies like "I friended you, but I can't read your LJ! Do you know English?))
My favourite reply of this ilk, though comes from a young individual who wrote (spelling and such left intact:
"I have added you as friend...I can't read your page thro...hope you can read my.... Is this germen language"
*blink* *blink*
German???
(First hint this is a young person, anyone who lived through the cold war recognizes "Russian", even if it happens to be Bulgarian or Serbian or Ukrainian. (aka "commie writing" in the 80s))
I visit the poor misguided's user page (mainly to see if their age is revealed to back up my claim, it isn't as such), and find the phrase "college student" in their bio.
Oh. My. God.
I truly, TRULY have underestimated the American (their location is Ohio, so I know it's American) academic process if they think that German is written in Cyrillic alphabet. I would have completely forgiven if they said *any* Slavic language (even Romanian or Polish because they're Eastern European), but ... German? And this person passed high school?
American universities must be easier to get into than Paris Hilton!
I weep for you, America. I truly do.
(Final note: if you happen to be visiting this entry and you are one of the people referenced, such as those that friended the spammer or even the user who thinks German is written in Cyrillic, please don't think I'm laughing and making fun of you and calling you names and whatnot. My main target of this is the American educational system. To attend university should be a honour, to demonstrate above average knowledge. I'm not saying you don't belong in university, just not until some basic knowledge is learned at lower levels first. I assumed perfunctory education in the various languages is one of those criterion.
However, if you happen to be visiting this entry and you are the spammer referred to, *you* are the pathetic one. Get a life. I may have been nearly friendless when I was a kid, but even I didn't go tricking/begging for friends.)
