Went to Nuit Blanche in Toronto this weekend.
As always I had a blast. The Drake Hotel had some nice installation art and performance pieces to it. I participated in one of the performance pieces where I got a back massage from this massively built guy and then had a tarot reading done by this eastern European lady.
Every year Nuit Blanche seems to grow in size and this year was no different. Some people were complaining that it has become more of a party then anything else but that is alright. There are still plenty of weird and surreal experiences involved and I guess that is what it is really about right, a unique bizarre experience.
I was a bit disappointed that many of the local art galleries on Queen Street weren't open for the event. It seems like it would have been the perfect opportunity to show off ones art.
Biggest complaint was from the lack of public funding from the city. Considering they closed down large portions of Dundas street and Yonge Street you would have thought that they would have put more garbage cans and portatoilets out.
Overall I think the most artistic and engaging things I saw were actually in the local galleries. A lot of it made me want to pick up a paintbrush or do some print making.
I should go to the art galleries during normal business hours to better appreciate this.
