All right, since I tend to talk about this all the time anyway, I might as well write down some thoughts I have about my hobby that I get the most enjoyment out of: gaming.

Now, granted, gaming can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. You can say it to your average joe at a bar, and he'll probably assume you're talking about last week's scrabble, chess or other board game. Go by the bar's I visit more regularly and mention gaming, and you'll be in the midst of a conversation about console video games you don't remember starting. Head by my work and mention it, and you'll know more about World of Warcraft than you've ever desired. Or if you're feeling adventurous, bring it up to one of my friends and they'll talk your ear off regarding D&D and table-top gaming. Even in most book stores (McKay's being the obvious exception), they'll assume you're looking for collectible/trading card games.

As you can probably guess, though, talking to me about gaming can mean any one of these. In fact, I think I can honestly say that, aside from sports gaming (which can still be taken in more than one direction, such as fantasy teams, betting, video games, etc.), I'm into pretty much anything that has the word "game" in it. A lot of people tend to call themselves "hobbyist gamers" when they play any one of the above about as often as I play it. I wonder, though, since I don't really do any one of them as seriously as someone involved in just one... does this just make me a "hobbyist"? Or am I considered a "gamer", since I do keep involved in all of them?

So, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have a lot of entries about my (mis)adventures in the lands of gaming... unfortunately, I think I've rambled too much on the topic of what gaming means to me to seriously address any specific encounters in roleplaying or crazy definitions in Balderdash right now. So I'll save that for another time.

gaming, rants
