Non-spoilery Heroes comment: I want to have sex with the guy who wrote the ep. That sums up my feelings about said ep pretty nicely.
Now for some news/links.
So
the DOW dropped like your favorite metaphor about dropping things. It was interesting watching the reactions to the news as it slowly spread through my office. We've got quite the cross section of economic status there so the responses of "Oh shit" did run a scale. Of note,
this is the biggest Net drop in a day, but not the biggest percentage drop. (Shorthand summary: Bad, but not as bad as if we hit biggest percentage drop. But who's quibbling at a loss of $1.2 trillion in market value? What's that? Two month's rent in California? Oh, wait...)
And yanno, I'm not going to say who you should vote for or anything but when even
FOX NEWS points out that Obama's statement was to try to help folks calm down and McCain's was "THIS IS TOTALLY OBAMA'S FAULT!" ... well probably Fox News didn't realize that we're interrogating that text from a different perspective, but still.
And since the quotes keep vanishing on me, here's the parts I'm talking about:
“Democratic and Republican leaders have agreed, but members have not yet agreed. And there are going to be some bumps and trials and tribulations and ups and downs before we get this rescue package done,” Obama said. “It’s important for the American public and for the markets to stay calm because things are never smooth in Congress, and to understand that it will get done.”
“I know a lot of people are nervous. A lot of people in this audience and a lot of people who may be watching today. But now is not the time for fear. Now is not the time for panic.”
Versus:
“Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain, and refused to even say if he supported the final bill,” said McCain adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin. “This bill failed because Barack Obama and the Democrats put politics ahead of country.”
And, yanno, figuring out if this bill would do anything to help our economy is way outta my league (Hi, I was a psych major) but I can do the math on 60% Democrats voting for it vs. less than a third of Republicans to figure out which party had more people voting for the bill. Juuuuust saying.
But hey, apparently
this isn't the first time McCain and Obama had problems reaching across the aisle to one another. Here's the sixpense summary of this trip back to February 2006:
Obama: Hey, John! Wanna team up to
create some ethics reform?
McCain:
FUCK YOU I paraphrase just a little.
Back in the business world we find
women should not be left out of the boardroom. I assume a later edit will have the BBC including the part about how, based on today's numbers, clearly women couldn't fuck it up more than the men have.
The economy is encouraging/forcing us all to learn how to scale down. I've been into these concepts for a while which is why
this neighborhood makes my mouth completely fill with drool.
Get Rich Slowly talks about the benefits of making and doing. I'm not saying my ability to knit is going to fix the economy, I'm just saying I've got a head start on knowing how to make blankets for my cardboard box summer home.
Need graph paper?
Print it! Much like SUV hybrids I can't help but wonder if this is brilliant or missing the point.
Another way to find rideshares. Of note, apparently plenty of people would love to rideshare they just can't find a driver and a car.
A white Muslim woman removes her hijab and we all learn a bit about priveledge.
