Vacation and links

Aug 16, 2008 16:52

Vacation, day one. Already I have done knitting and cuddling with kitties. There's been other stuff too but c'mon. Priorities.

Some links for you all! Including one I think is a must-see for everyone who is... what's the word I'm looking for? Oh yeah, alive. You can view Killing Us Softly 3, Advertising's Image of Women online thanks to googlevideo. It's a few years old but very sad how much has yet to change. (See also: Wrangler uses dead women to sell jeans. Which is from THIS WEEK WTF.) As Jean says, advertising sells more than products. Of note is how she also discusses racism. There's plenty of examples for that intersectionality that IBARW was talking about.

More responses to the idea of Hollywood and the Bechdel test. It's great how one post has such a ripple effect. Especially when the effect is a positive one.

Mrs. Fields is filing for bankruptcy, apparently due to the cost of supplies and how folks aren't buying as many luxury items as before.

I've talked before about how much I love Adrian Pasdar's vids so it possibly BDSMs an ex-equine to say how much I love the latest one with Milo and Masi. However if you can tear yourself away from the boys for a moment - and I do understand it's hard - note how there's a person in the background apparently getting their picture taken. It leaves me wondering if there was some random tourists hanging out in the same spot who had no idea who was standing just a few feet away from them.

Girls Read Comics talks about harassment at Cons, which we all remember from the Open Source Being A Jackass project. Of note, ComiCon apparently has no written policy about harassment, which surprises me given to how huge it is. You'd think their lawyers would've had clauses specifying the proper way to go to the bathroom while they were at it. But it just goes to show how safety can't be taken for granted. And how fucked up it is that that's the status quo.

Echidne of the Snakes brings us this post about health care which raises an issue I hadn't thought of, namely portibility. We're all used to how the current US healthcare system tends to mean that most people have no coverage at all. This post points out that those who do have coverage also have problems with keeping it. Issues like moving and/or changing jobs can effect how much coverage you currently have. I know for me that was something I took for granted so much that it never even occured to me that there could be a different way of approaching that problem.

Get Me Out of Here provides a way for you to get out of awkward meetings. I'm sure I would never have a reason to use this product. Ahem.

I had problems figuring out if hybrid SUVs were either missing the point or brilliant marketing. Turns out it's a bit of both.

Also on the topic of caring for Mother Earth - not dirty - is recycling your sex toys. Which is dirty. But in the good way.

Your environmental - or frugal - heart may be interested in how high gas prices may be changing the way we drive. When my Older Brother lived in the city he used Zip Car and it worked very well for him and his then family of four. I also think fondly of getting a scooter but for my needs I don't think it would work. So I'll stay with Serenity, who is green in that she gets fabulous gas mileage, and in that I didn't immediately sell her a year later for a newer car.

Find Starbucks to be too gay? How about some boobs with your latte? It's sad when we're not kidding. Also? Danger of burns in tender places much??

I find that the UK idea that women who allow themselves to get drunk should understand that they are now allowed to be raped is such a timely decision, considering that not long after on my feeds list I saw this article about a 13 year old who was plied with drink, then raped. That whore. (And note: Rape in the headline, downgraded to sexual assault in the copy. Because drunk 13 year olds are totally asking for it. Sigh.)
