That being said, here is my weetiny speculation for next week's ep. No spoilers, except for last night's ep.

Eric Kripke promised that there wouldn't be a cliffhanger at the end of this season (so instead, he made it last night *keyboard smash!*) so I'm hoping that this whole thing will be at least relatively solved by the end of next week's episode.

(Also? I really want there to be like, something stuck in Sam that Dean needs to pull out in order for him to come back to life. *looks shifty*)

Maybe they were forced to avoid an end of season cliffhanger because of the uncertainty of renewal - there's nothing worse than a show whose season ends in a cliffhanger and then is cancelled eg. "Alien Nation", "Prey", "Invasion" etc.
