The gall of the statement- or maybe it wasn't even gall at all, but instead the fact that everyone seemed so quick to make those hasty judgments about Sookie, all blonde and clueless and clearly sheltered- had Sookie blinking for a few moments. Who was Rory to say what she'd heard of and what she hadn't? Maybe if they had been warm and dry in the Compound, she would have corrected him. Challenged him to present something that would knock her socks off. But as things stood, Sookie had more than enough sense to know that it was best left until later to discuss, even if part of her was always tempted to ease people's hopes down a little upon arriving on the island. She didn't like waiting to watch their hopes to fall and shatter on the ground.

"Here, take my shoes," Sookie smiled at Jenny, one that trembled from fear and uncertainty as she slipped off her sandals. "I think our sizes are probably closer, and I've walked around barefoot often enough that my feet aren't dainty anymore to begin with."

That fear, though, was quick to fester, Sookie's chest feeling tight even as she started after Rory, trying her best to constantly match his pace. Every sound that seemed to break the pattern, every strange howl of wind and snap of a branch, made Sookie more prone to jumping, until the sound of a roar in the distance pulled a yelp out of her. "I think- I think there's somethin' out there. Should we hide? Wait until it passes?" she asked, voice as hushed as Sookie could manage without being swallowed altogether by the sound of rain.

"Oh, you don't have to -" Jenny tried to protest, but Sookie's shoes were already off and she was already stepping into them, hurrying, then, to close the distance put between herself and the others in the few moments it had taken. The last thing she wanted was to risk getting lost out here; she didn't think either of them - or Sookie, at least - would leave her behind, but they were in enough trouble already, and she wasn't about to add to that. Stumbling forward, teeth worrying at her lower lip, she followed along, trying to stay at Sookie's side. Jenny prided herself on not being outwardly too clingy, but here in the middle of nowhere with a stranger, she supposed it was understandable.

It served her well, too, at the sound of a noise, her hand going to Sookie's arm as she looked around, wide-eyed. Under other circumstances, it might have been funny, how much she probably looked like a character out of a horror movie, but as it was, she could focus on nothing but sheer terror, teeth worrying at her lower lip. "Do we even know what that was?" she asked, voice unsteady, then decided that it didn't matter and shook her head. "Either way, I think we should get out of the way. We don't want... whatever made that noise... to find us."

About to snap a response at her (though it shouldn't really be called snapping as Rory did such things infrequently at best and usually when he had some better reason to be snappish than being soaking wet and alone), Rory spun around with a hand raised just as that sound reverberated through the forest. He stood, frozen, finger pointing to the sky and realized that they were all very, very unarmed. Suddenly he felt a bit more naked than either of the girls in their nightclothes.

"Right, we should... definitely just move away from... that," Rory said, dropping his hand a bit so as to waggle his finger in the direction of the sound. "Let's just... yeah, let's just keep moving. Maybe a little faster."

Feeling the curl of fingers over her arm, Sookie's hand immediately moved to cover Jenny's, clutching tightly and feeling no more reassured when Rory also began to clearly panic. It wasn't entirely the fact that he was the man of the group- although, being from a rather traditional region, the tendency to look to the 'man' of the house was instinctual- but instead the fact that he had clearly taken it upon himself to look over the both of them, fording a path through the forest, only to then lose so much of his resolve over whatever that sound had been. And where a leader fumbled, those who followed inevitably tripped, to the point that Sookie could only feel fear sliding down her back with a chill greater than the pouring rain.

Not even sure what to say to Rory, the situation possibly twice as foreign to him as herself and Jenny and him already hanging off the end of some sort of tether, Sookie turned instead to the other blonde, her breath snagging as rain dripped from her chin. "J-Jenny, when you think of- of places on the island that aren't... really occupied by people and don't even have paths. That doesn't- does it make you think of the place I'm thinkin' about? Fenced off."

Unwilling to put it in words until absolutely necessary, Sookie squeezed her eyes shut after an apologetic glance in Rory's direction, even as the three of them continued to move through the thick of the forest. "Dinosaurs."

If the possibility had occurred to Jenny before, she had made a point of ignoring it, not needing to panic any more than she was already. Having it spelled out, though, she couldn't pretend it wasn't an option anymore, and probably the most likely one. It wouldn't be the first time it had happened, from what she'd been told, groups of people just appearing in dinosaur territory at the same time and having to find their way back. That wasn't remotely comforting when now it was happening to her.

"Holy shit," she breathed, still staring wide-eyed and open-mouthed at Sookie, tempted, too, to grab Rory, though that instinct was one she suppressed, him still being a stranger to the other two of them. "That was a dinosaur. Oh, God, oh, God, we have to hide, we can't - that thing could get us, he's right, we need to move."

"Oh that's great," Rory let slip, more a huff of air than a statement. Maybe they were still wherever Jenny and Sookie thought they were and that could very well be a dinosaur. (Rory, for the moment and for the sake of mental argument, decided not to question that the girls had been living near actual dinosaurs. If there could be vampires in Venice, there could be dinosaurs on an island.) But maybe it had been something else all-together and sending a teenager into a panic could be the worst possible option.

His sigh of frustration could have also related to the fact that Rory had a bad track record when it came to reptilian creatures from millions of years ago. He glanced side to side, ostensibly looking for the proper path (or rather space with less foliage) but also (perhaps foolishly) looking for a blue box or a large crack. Anything familiar.

"If it's a predator, if we run, it might just make it want to chase us more," Rory reasoned, seemingly pulling information out of nowhere. Actually it came from an ancient but surprisingly sturdy man in the early second century AD. Not a natural memory of Rory's, but one he'd take. "We may need to hide though. Maybe it wouldn't be able to scent us with all this mud and crap around." Even so, Rory took a few steps to the side and, with minor difficulty, wrenched a somewhat intimidating branch from a fallen log. He stripped it of its leaves as they carried on, Rory setting a swift pace but not about to leave the girls behind.

Funny, how Sookie never really had exposure to the notion of predators other than vampires, and yet they matched unquestionably with the description. Vampires liked the chase, liked the struggle as much as they liked the ability to hook people in quietly, under the radar. Sookie looked over her shoulder for just a moment, almost expecting to find something, someone, but finding nothing but sweeping foliage, she ducked down to tug a second branch away from the log. Stubbornly, she winced as she placed a foot over the bark to help brace herself as she pulled the makeshift weapon away, pulling her hand away from Jenny's for a moment as she similarly stripped the branch down.

"Well, we can't hide forever, wherever we go," Sookie reasoned, occasionally sputtering through heavy rain as she dropped a hand to hold Jenny's, squeezing tight in hopes of reassuring the young woman. "We can't expect that people will come to look for us, and the dinosaurs aren't exactly gonna leave the place they've been livin' for years. Maybe we keep on walkin' until dark? And duck for cover if we hear anythin' approaching too quickly."

There was little reassurance to be found in a situation like this, with so much uncertainty and their one possible option being something so, so awful, but Sookie's clasping her hand gave about as much as was possible, Jenny holding tight in return. On their own out here, she was going to take whatever comfort she could get. It was better than nothing, better than being completely alone. While she wasn't sure that that was a sentiment she would ever be able to vocalize, she could at least act on it, especially when she wasn't sure what was going to happen next, if they were even going to make it.

And Jenny really, really did not want to die.

"If we can make it to the fence," she said, and paused to gasp, breathless in her attempts to keep up the pace, not wanting to fall behind or slow the others down. "If we can make it to the fence, then - then they can't get to us. The dinosaurs, I mean. They can't cross it." The prospect was admittedly a glimmer of hope, but one that didn't last long. "It would just be nice if we knew which way it is."

"There's a fence?" Rory boggled, shooting a bewildered look over his shoulder at the two. "You fence up the local dinosaurs like pets? Or is this like that Jurassic Park movie?" Dinosaurs? Good. Fine. Well, not good, but fine. Rory could accept that. He learned to accept homo reptilia; he could accept their stupider cousins existing. But a fence? It was too mundane to fit in the scenario, like remembering that the Silurians lived beneath Wales.

He shifted his gaze forward again, now searching the dense foliage for some sign of Rory and the Doctor with more than a hint of desperation. Was this some kind of joke? It couldn't have been. It'd be an awful, terrible joke if it were, and he knew the Doctor might take a shot at him but not an actual, dangerous shot. No, this was serious, and it needed fixing now.

"We can hide forever. People do it all the time," Rory reasoned, clearing his throat once after, wary now of letting fear creep through. "We just.. keep walking. Stop at night and try to build some shelter or at least get off the ground. The fence has got to-- it's not like a wall, right? It's a fence around an area? We've got to run into it no matter which way we go, right?"

"Yes, there's a fence," Sookie quickly responded, hand momentarily squeezing Jenny's a bit tighter, hopeful as a smile almost threatened to pull at her lips. "I'm not sure anyone really knows how it got there, but it's out there and every dinosaur seems to have some sort of collar that keeps it from crossin' that invisible fence. We can pass it just fine, though. It's not like any of us really wanted dinosaurs or around or expected to be able to tame them, it's just they were here and... well, I don't know. Maybe they're guardin' something, but I can't bring myself to care enough right now. We're not equipped for it."

She wondered, vaguely, as much as her mind would allow, why the task force hadn't taken it upon themselves to try and rid the region of dinosaurs. Maybe it was seen as too much of a risk, maybe there weren't enough people foolish enough to be willing to risk their lives for a dinosaur hunt- and she couldn't blame them, even if it seemed like there'd be better odds than people had in great wars. But the fence could break at any time. Innocent children, like Jenny more or less was, could be snatched and dumped in that area of the island without warning, defenseless. The rushing thoughts were effective in diverting her thoughts away from fear, emboldening her enough to nod resolutely at Rory's reasoning.

"But yeah, we should be able to cross the fence no matter which way we go, I think, just as long as we keep on goin' as straight as we can. And pray the dinosaurs don't find us in the process."

"Yeah, yeah, we'll be fine to cross the fence," Jenny said quickly, nodding in agreement to what Sookie had said. She was barely thinking about it, though, too caught up in an earlier statement of Rory's. Bad as this was, she hadn't thought of it quite in those terms, and the possibility of still being stuck out here overnight was enough to have her terrified all over again. The island wasn't that big, she thought; they ought to have been able to at least get out of dinosaur territory before nightfall. That was what she hoped, at least. Now, she couldn't help but ask. "You... don't really think we'll have to be here overnight, though, do you? I mean, it's still early, so as long as we keep walking..."

She didn't sound half as sure of herself as she'd have liked to, but that wasn't a priority now. Maybe Rory and Sookie -- for whom she was continuously, increadingly grateful -- could keep themselves together in the face of what was so obviously a crisis situation, but there was no way in hell she could have managed, no matter how hard she tried. She'd never even been the outdoorsy type in the first place, and this was something both something she'd been thrust into unwillingly and unbelievably dangerous. Panic was inevitable.

Rory honestly had no good answer for the girl, so he hefted his thin shoulders up in a shrug, keeping his eyes peeled the entire time for a hint of blue or a streak of red. "How big is this island of yours? And is there any chance it'll stop pissing rain?" This last question was asked rhetorically, but God, Rory wished someone would say yes. It really wouldn't be good in the long run, and in the short term is made the ground alternatively slick and sticky.

"This isn't exactly a stroll through the--" Stopping short, Rory stared straight ahead and threw his arms out to either side of himself, simultaneously holding the girls back and protecting them. Symbolically on both counts anyway. "I thought I saw--" His explanation was cut short by a definite stomping sound and rustle of branches to their right, much closer than the previous roar had been. His grip tightened on the tree branch. "...I think it's circling." Which was Rory's helpful contribution to the moment, the kind of thing maybe the Doctor would have told him to shut up about but then used seconds later.

Rory didn't know how to use it in any genius escape though, just tried to be as still and nonthreatening as possible, while still holding the branch.

Sookie thanked her stars as Rory asked a question that she could actually give a definitive answer to, no guesswork or hypothesizing- even if the query that followed immediately after demanded it. At least there was something, though, to help her prove that she wasn't just a thorn in his side or helpless to contribute to the group at all. "About ten miles across the widest part of the island, so I don't think the dinosaur territory's any more than five miles, since over half of the island is fine to live on. Um. As for the rain, I doubt it's supposed to last forever, but... I have no idea if it might stop soon, 'cause it's been rainin' for about three weeks now."

But before there could be any more gripping on her part about the rain and how fudging depressing it all was, Rory's arms suddenly thrust to either side of her, keeping her back. She was just about to ask if he'd seen something when he verbally confirmed the suspicion anyway, causing Sookie's already sun-deprived pallor to grow further white, her hand suddenly gripping the smaller branch she'd pulled tightly enough to draw blood from a couple of scratches. Her knees, by contrast, suddenly threatened to buckle as Sookie made to stumble through a turn, keeping her gaze wary as, between Rory and her, the two of them were able to see two-thirds of the perimeter at any moment.

"Circlin'?" she hissed, quickly starting to feel panic creeping over her person. "It's- what's that supposed to mean, it's circlin'? Is is gettin' ready to tear us apart?"

"What?" Jenny asked, voice so high-pitched that it sounded nearly like a shriek. Probably she ought to have been keeping quiet, but if Rory and Sookie were right, and they had to be, when she'd noticed the same things, then it wasn't going to make much of a difference either way. She thought herself entitled to a little bit of audible panic, seeing as they were apparently about to fucking die. "Circling? No, it could still just... go away, right? We aren't really going to..."

She trailed off there, swallowing back a lump in her throat, not wanting to spend her last few minutes alive crying in the middle of dinosaur territory, though it was a near thing. They had seconds, maybe, left, and being such a mess already, her appearance wasn't what mattered. "Oh, God," she whimpered, keeping as close to Rory as she could, figuring he was absolutely trustworthy for any attempts to keep them safe, even if a giant stick wasn't likely to do much good, either. "Oh my God, I am way too young to die, I don't want to, at least not without saying goodbye."

Was this what the Doctor dealt with every time he tried to save the day? Rory didn't know how he handled it if it were. He didn't have to look around to know the tension in Sookie's body, like he could feel it just by her standing beside him, and Jenny whimpering about being too young to die just made him want to cry and join her. He was too young to die, too! In this go-round anyway.

Whatever it was didn't circle completely, but doubled-back, like it chose to focus on one side of their party or was drawing an invisible line where they should not cross. It wove back and forth, some foliage breaking down under its feet, the stomping plain to the ear. They didn't have time to decide that running in the opposite direction would be an option before the thing burst from the trees with a roar, displaying its very dangerous looking head.

Rory, having worked himself up now to a suitable level of bravery, responded in kind, shouting as he brought the branch down on the dome of the creature's head. It made a dull thunk noise before rebounding.

"Always the way," Rory griped, muttering under his breath as the creature recovered from its surprise and lunged again. Rory pushed the girls back before, in a moment of sheer stupidity or bravery, swung his branch upwards, smacking the more unprotected underside of the dinosaur's jaw.

"Run!" he ordered. Fully prepared to stand there and buy the girls some time (maybe through distracting the thing with a full meal), Rory then noticed, when the dino reeled back, just how scraggly its arms where. He pressed forward with his attack, wielding the branch deftly, like a swordsman, until, three swings in, he thought he heard something before the dinosaur let out a roar of pain.

"REALLY, REALLY RUN!" he shouted now, hightailing it himself.

No matter how many times Sookie wanted to prove that she was strong, that she could handle herself, it was hard not to buckle under a situation where she couldn't even reason with the threat looming menacingly in front of them all. It took everything that she had in her not to whimper along with Jenny, looking instead to Rory's example as an adult who was, if not necessarily well-versed in dinosaurs and knowing how to have them escape the situation, at least not losing his head completely. Yet.

But when the dinosaur came into view, more lifelike and not quite the same as all of the computer-generated images of the retipes of old, Sookie couldn't even breathe, finding her feet rooted firmly into the ground as she could do nothing with the branch in her hands intended for use as a weapon, nor could she offer even the slightest of brushes with her thumb to comfort Jenny. Like a deer caught in the headlights, all Sookie did was stand. Stare, with a body trembling slightly, coming to realizations more quickly than her mind could.

Until she watched Rory hit the dinosaur once, and then push both her and Jenny back for a second go. Feeling her bare feet slip, nearly sending her falling back to the ground, Sookie immediately shrieked.

"What're you doin'- ARE YOU INSANE?"

First waving Jenny off to run ahead of them, Sookie then lingered just enough to snatch Rory's wrist tightly with her hand, giving him a concerned- almost manic- look as she tugged him to a start. All three of them bounding through the heavy rain, Sookie spotted a small cave in the near distance. They couldn't keep on running forever. They had to hide, to keep from view until the dinosaur lost interest, or at least ran on ahead, spurred by anger.

"Here-" Sookie ran into the small space, clapping a hand over her mouth even as her lungs screamed for air, listening to the approaching steps of the beast from a distance.
