Well during my insominiatic bout last night I read a whole book called the camera my mother gave me, by Susanna Kaysen, who wrote Girl interrupted. It was non fiction about her problems with her vagina, literally.
"If you have a vagina you know that most of the time it is without sensation....How do you kidneys feel? How does your pancreas feel? Luckily we have no idea how those things feel. The vagina is mostly like a pancreas and feels nothing. If it feels something, it is either erotically engaged or ill.........All of this is obivious if you have one but half of us don't. ..........I have one and something went wrong with it"
Defently a very interesting and funny read. I've gone through this with my mother and its the most frustrating thing in the world when you know your sick and no one can tell you why and whats wrong with you. Who knew you could write a whole novel about a womens vagina?!
A quote from Fast girls........."Throughout patriarchal history the loose woman has had no loose man as a counterpart. Never has the promiscous man been perceived as evil and dangerous the way a promiscous woman has." pg 98
She also makes references to a movie from 1961
"Splendor in the grass".....my mother made me watched it, its one of her favorites and its a really good movie and shows the extreme of trying to remain pure and fighting your hormones.
I really like this book, but find it frustrating because nothing has changed, even with all the cosmo articles about being a strong woman and screwing who you want when you want is still bullshit. Society still pigeonholes you as a slut. She goes on to say how some of the "sluts" (girls) wish they were guys because then they could have sex with no strings attached emotionally and not be looked down upon in society. I really identified with that.
And I am sorry but don't you think as women we are just a little pathetic? I mean we make up half the population so why than are we always the exploited weaker half. Is it because subconciously some women want men to remain in power, or what? Theres three billion of us shouldn't we get our act together?
Or maybe we really aren't built that way. After reading dropped threads with these strong independant canadian writers they still had all the same bullshit with shitty husbands, sacrificing their dreams for mens and etc. And if smart, educated and financially independant women have these problems where does that leave the rest of us?
Finally I am starting yet another book tonight, Ten little indians, by Alexie Sharma, he wrote the screenplay to smoke screens if any of you saw it.
Don't ask me why but I have a fascination with aboriginal culture I've read lots of fiction books with aboriginal characters and authors and I am in love with Noth of 60 and the movie the Snow Walker. Why do you think that is?
And I am I the only loser who sits at home and watches movies because i would love a community to discuss movies as well. I watched and icelandic movie last night called the "sea" it was really great it reminded me of a danish movie called the "celebration" and if you havn't seen that one you should, Adrienne in particular i think you would love it.
