I thought this was an interesting book, very smart and well-written, but I didn't really enjoy reading it. The Handmaid's Tale is similar because in both books, the future sucks, but at least in Handmaid there are a few likable characters. I didn't like anyone in Oryx and Crake. I didn't dislike Oryx, but she had no personality. I'm sure there's a reason for that I'm not getting. Maybe that's the way Jimmy saw her?
Anyway, I'm sure Atwood wouldn't care whether I liked the characters or not. She's obviously trying to get people to think about the extent to which genetic modification is OK. The book definitely succeeded in doing that. I guess with Handmaid's Tale it's easy to say, look what those crazy fundamentalists might do someday, but Oryx and Crake hits a little closer to home.
