Back to the Blog

Okay, so I haven't updated in a while. A long while. A long long long while.

But I decided that I'm going to give something a try. I'm going to comment on the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball season through this blog. Boring, I know, but since about two people will read this anyway, who cares? It's an online journal.

So, I went to Spring Training, and everybody's been telling me to be upbeat, about how the hitting is better, the pitching is better, we've got veterans, we're done losing, etc. And yet, look at the Pirates right now...

Three straight losses. A sweep. By the Brewers. Not a perennial powerhouse of the NL Central, but not a quick and easy win, either. We should have been able to hold onto ONE of those games. Just ONE. And instead of being 0-3, we'd be 1-2. The season just started and we're already in the hole by three games. If we sweep the Reds, we'll be 3-3 for the opener, but I somehow doubt that the Pirates can do this.

I live and die by the Buccos, but now is time for them to start showing up the games. Hitting needs to improve. Starting pitching is okay, but nothing special. And the bullpen is killing us. I thought Mike Gonzalez was going to be our weak spot, but we haven't even had a CHANCE to put him in a save situation. It seems that every year, the pirates are missing something. One years its the sticks. We get power the next year, but lose starting pitching. We get starting pitching, but lose the bullpen. Then we lose the pitching again, but have a great bullpen, defense, and batting corps.

The Pirates are cursed. Fuck the Red Sox. It's been 13 years since we had a winning season. 13 years. The last time the Pirates were above .500 when the season ended was when George Bush the First was in office. A clock around one's neck and parachute pants were considered indispensable parts of one's wardrobe. Kirby Puckett was still in baseball. No one had even HEARD of Ken Griffey Jr. Barry Bonds stole 40 bases and weighed a mean 205. Mullets were still in style in Pittsburgh... okay, so things haven't changed THAT much.

In any case, things need to change. I'll update after tonight's loss- I mean, game against the Reds.
