Suddenly the light dimmed and a spotlight lit up the stage. The first notes of a violin was heard before a stream of notes followed them, painting out a beautiful story for its listeners. JiYong’s frown disappeared and he let his body relax, date forgotten, lost to the melody. He pictured himself walking hand in hand with someone whose face he couldn’t make out along the Hanriver. They were talking and happily exchanging ideas for compositions’. They stopped under a big oak tree where they sat down up against its trunk. Naturally did their heads lean on each other as they started to hum, not really words, but more like unspoken promises. Promises of love.
JiYong was brutally pulled out of this beautiful scenery when the people in the restaurant began to applaud loudly; he automatically began to clap with the rest. He glanced at his watch, when it settled down. He had now been waiting for 50 minutes for this so called perfect date; it seems that SeungHyun didn’t know him all that well after all. JiYong likes his dates to actually show up. He was about to go and grab his coat when he heard someone calling for him. He turned around and saw the violinist looking at him.
“Uuhm, you’re JiYong, right? Kwon JiYong?” JiYong nods and wonder what the violinist wants with him and why he knew his name.
“Wow, what a relief. I was sure that you would be gone by now, because who actually waits for 50 minutes? But seems like I was wrong, SeungHyun hyung did say that you would wait and I am impressed that you did.” JiYong now opted to staring at the young man in front of him. Was this possible the date SeungHyun had set him up with?
“I’m so sorry, I must seem rude, not introducing myself before I start rambling on. Hello, nice to meet you I’m Henry your date for the evening.” He did a small bow before straightening up with a wide smile. JiYong was slightly reminded about mochis when he saw how the boy’s cheeks formed. He nodded and smiled back.
“Nice to meet you too, Henry.” Henry glanced at his watch before muttering a string of curse words. He looked at JiYong who was watching him with a lost expression. He looked at his watch again, before grabbing JiYong’s hand and started running. A waiter was standing by the door holding out JiYong’s jacket that Henry grabbed as they went by him. He kept running and dragging JiYong with him until they hit the big road. Where he stopped, breathless, so was JiYong. Henry threw JiYong’s coat to him and began trying to haul a cab. Soon after a cab pulled up to the sidewalk and Henry almost pushed JiYong inside before jumping in himself. He hurriedly tells the driver and address and first after he told him to hurry did he relax and turned his attention to JiYong who was staring at him like the other had just lost his mind.
“May I ask where we’re going? And why we’re in a hurry?” Henry’s smile widens and he nods.
“You see I made reservations at this amazingly cozy little place, where there is live music every night. Believe me you won’t find a better Bulgogi in the city.” JiYong stares for a few seconds before he answers.
“So you tell me I went out of my way to dress up like this for nothing?” He gestures to his suit with his hands. Henry nods and his smile widens even more if that’s possible.
“But I have spare clothes for you.” He holds up a paper bag, before he continues.
“SeungHyun Hyung got me some clothes for you that are more casual. Though it’s almost a shame, you look hot in that suit.” Henry hands him the bag and JiYong peeks in it and spots an outfit SeungHyun had asked him to put together for a photo shoot where the theme was a casual date.
“So why are we rushing like this?” He was curious now that he knew that Henry wasn’t some kind of murderer trying to lure him in a trap.
“I made a reservation for the very best spot in the whole place and it’s very likely that if we don’t make it on time they give it to someone else. Then the whole evening would be ruined.” Just as JiYong was about to say that he doubted the evening would be ruined, the cab stopped. Henry paid the driver and got out, he held out his hand to help JiYong. It was accepted.
It wasn’t a very big place, the lights dim and the interior not very impressive but it had a certain kind of atmosphere that made it seem like it was the most comfortable place to be in the world. Henry headed for a table in the right corner, completely cut off from the rest of the tables. He put down his violin case and pointed out the toilet to JiYong.
Unknown to JiYong was that Henry had begged SeungHyun for months to set them up together. The first time he saw JiYong was when he had come to help SeungHyun pick out clothes for a photo shoot were Henry was a model. The older had been wearing ripped jeans, a black wifebeater with a denim jacket over and a red hat. He had been enchanted by the other’s looks. Henry at the time had been a lot smaller and with a lot more baby fat, over the last few months had he been shooting up and lost a lot of the fat. So he was sure JiYong wouldn’t be able to recognize him. At the time had he only been a statist standing in the background with his violin pretending to play. JiYong had nothing to do with him, the only time they talked was when JiYong had asked him to hand him a cup of coffee. To which he obliged and ended up earning a thanks and a smile. That moment where JiYong’s smile was directed at him was where he felt his heart constrict and yearn painfully after something he didn’t know he was missing. That yearning was crushed when he saw a man come pick up JiYong after the shoot was over. Even though there weren’t any directly shown signs of the other man being JiYong’s boyfriend, there was enough indirectly signs. The way his hand lingered at the small of JiYong’s back, the way he was looking at him and the smiles they shared spoke for themselves. Henry had dejectedly dropped the idea of even talking to JiYong and headed home, his heart broken before it even got the chance to become complete.
A few weeks later Henry got a call from SeungHyun asking if he could do a spread out in his magazine about him. That month’s issue was about young talents and SeungHyun wanted Henry to be the main talent. Henry had agreed and three days later he found himself in the studio once again. He hadn’t forgotten about JiYong, but he had given up. There wasn’t even a chance that JiYong would style him, SeungHyun had said that it was going to be a natural shoot so he should just bring his favorite outfit and wear that.
They just finished the photo shoot when JiYong came running in looking desperately after SeungHyun, when he asked Henry he had just pointed towards the older man. JiYong had been crying. Henry decided to secretly listening in on their conversation.
“Hyung, he’s leaving. They want him to debut in the US. I don’t know what to do. I can’t live without him.” He could hear JiYong sobbing.
“Don’t you think you’re overreacting GD? I know you two have been together since ever and through every hardship or whatever, but the deal is he’s not you boyfriend he’s your best friend and he needs your support. Not the whining ass that you are right now. I know how much YB means to you and I know that you two always will stick together no matter how many miles there is between you. So now stop whining and get your ass back together because I bet that it’s harder for him right now than you.” Wow, Henry thought. It was the first time he had heard SeungHyun say so much in so short time.
“I know he’s not my boyfriend, I know I’m overreacting and of course I’m going to be there for him. I’m just going to miss him that’s all.”
“Well, you know he is practically your boyfriend. He picks you up; you go on dates and all that shit. The only thing that makes the difference is that you don’t kiss or fuck, except that one time where you both got pretty wasted.” He heard SeungHyun chuckle and a scoff probably from JiYong.
“You know Hyung, we got over that many years ago so should you. Bae and I are fine with it, it’s not awkward. Besides it was a nice experience” JiYong laughed.
“Dude, way too much information. Well, think about it this way my boyfriend dresses up as a girl and sings like that. He’s one of the most respected female singers in the country. I barely get to see him and when I do it’s on the TV dressed as a girl.” There came a sigh from SeungHyun.
“Well, at least he’s pretty as a girl.” Henry decided to stop listening before he heard probably one of the biggest secrets in the show business. This time he left with hope and a heart anticipating something new. After that he called SeungHyun everyday to ask if he could set him up on a date with JiYong and everyday he was rejected. He did it for so long that he ended up feeling like a creeper, but he just had to meet JiYong, have a conversation, anything and get proven that they weren’t meant to be before he would give up. One day SeungHyun took pity on him and agreed to ask JiYong if he wanted to get set up, but Henry had to promise that everything would be perfect and that he would start out playing the violin. Henry had thought that it was a strange thing to demand but agreed to it nonetheless. When SeungHyun had called him up and told him that JiYong agreed he felt as if a thousand fireworks had been lid in his body. He and SeungHyun spend a week planning the date down to the smallest detail. The only thing that could go wrong was that JiYong would leave during those 50 minutes he would have to wait. Henry was grateful he didn’t because otherwise he wouldn’t be able to see him looking like that.
JiYong was walking out from the bathroom, his hair styled high with wax, tight black jeans, black Dr. Marten boots and a oversized checkered shirt. It was casual, but he looked so damn hot in it, Henry thought. JiYong smiled and sat down before him.
“Have you ordered yet?” He asked.
“Nope, wanted to wait. I wouldn’t know if you wanted to have the most amazing Bulgogi in the world, but who am I to judge. It’s only the best in the whole wide world.” Henry grinned, when he saw that JiYong began to chuckle.
“I think I’ll test you on that and I’ll have a beer on the side. Do you drink Henry?” Henry nodded and smiled.
“Yeah I do sometimes, but I’m not that strong of a drinker. Hope you won’t try to drink me under the table or something.” The conversation went on fluidly and they joked and laughed. It wasn’t until the waiter cleared his throat that they noticed him.
“What can I do for you today?” He asked politely. Henry grinned up at him.
“Don’t be so formal Hyung. Hyung this is JiYong, JiYong this is DongHae Hyung. He owns the place and is my best friend’s oldest big brother.” JiYong offers his hand with a smile and DongHae takes it smiling back,
“Nice to meet you DongHae.. Hyung?” JiYong casts a glance at Henry who nods.
“He’s older than SeungHyun Hyung.” Henry tells.
“So can I take your orders? Or do you plan on starving the rest of your date.” Henry playfully punches him in the side.
“Two orders of the best Bulgogi in the world, and tell Halmoni to be extra diligent with it today. I have something I need to prove and two beers, thank you.” DongHae nods and scribbles it down before walking away into the kitchen.
“I have to agree with you. That was the best Bulgogi I have ever tasted!” JiYong laughed as they walked along the Hanriver.
“I sure hope so, or half of my food went to waste and I had really looked forward to eating it.” JiYong looked back at Henry and smiled.
“Well instead you get to walk a bloated guy back home. I don’t know how I can still fit my jeans, I just can’t believe it.” He grinned and turned completely around so he could face Henry while he was walking backwards.
“Oh, I think I can survive that. You still look amazing in my eyes” Henry wore a soft expression while saying it and JiYong started sporting a red tint on his cheeks. He stopped and waited for Henry to catch up before he grabbed Henry’s hand.
“Thanks for a fantastic evening. I really enjoyed it.” He gave Henry’s hand a squeeze. It had been a long time since JiYong have had that much fun with someone he met for the first time. Henry really had been the perfect date. JiYong made a mental note about thanking SeungHyun for setting him up with Henry. He couldn’t wait to tell Bae about the date, when he told him the info he got from SeungHyun about Henry, had Bae been skeptical and thought it was a stupid idea. He had been proven wrong. JiYong looked at Henry who was telling a story about when he met his best friend. A childlike aura rested over his features even when he was being serious but JiYong still felt safe and at ease with Henry. JiYong stopped and Henry looked confused at him.
“You know what Henry? I’m really lucky, it’s been years since I last dated and that ended in chaos but then on the first date after that terrible relationship I end up with the most wonderful guy.” Henry starts blushing furiously; it was nice to hear that from someone you’ve been going after for months. JiYong stepped closer and wrapped his arms around Henry’s waist.
“Really lucky” JiYong then leans in and slowly kisses Henry on the lips. Henry feels as if his inside is exploding into millions of pieces of pure happiness. JiYong’s soft lips on his felt like heaven and when JiYong pulled back Henry felt as if a little part of him went missing. “I might just be the luckiest guy in the world right now.” He kisses Henry again, this time with more force. JiYong know that he made the right decision about kissing Henry, when Henry kissed back with just as much longing as himself. Henry’s lips made him feel appreciated and wanted, he felt as if Henry had known him all of his life. They pulled apart when air became necessary thing, they stood there for what felt like an eternity just looking at each other and taking in the others presences in their arms. It wasn’t until an old lady came walking by eying them with a look of disgust that they broke apart. They had forgotten they were out in the public. They walked with pinkies holding on to each other the rest of the way home to JiYong. The walk was quiet, but JiYong was having a mental argument with himself about asking Henry to come up for a ‘cup of coffee’ or not. They reached his door before he could decide.
“This is it isn’t it?” JiYong nods and looks down, clearly not pleased with it coming so soon.
“Do you wanna come up for a cup of coffee?” JiYong said it hastily, as if it was something to be ashamed of. He felt as if what he said was a sin, even though it did lead to the possibility of sex it didn’t necessarily mean that.
“Even though I would love too, more than anything right now, I don’t think it’s a good idea. But I would like your number?” Henry smiles to JiYong. JiYong nods in understanding, he could see it. But now it was out in the open and he had laid out the proposal so he was satisfied with himself. JiYong hands him his cell phone and gets Henry’s in return. They enter their phone numbers and take a cute selca so the other will see their face if they call.
“I wouldn’t mind doing this again.. Next time I’m planning, because I don’t want to wait for another 50 min again.” JiYong joked, Henry laughed along.
“Well well if your highness demands so, it will be so. I would be honored if you took me out on a date.” They stopped laughing and almost on cue looked around to see if there was anyone around, before closing the distance and kissed each other. When they parted, Henry quickly bid his goodbye and waved to JiYong while walking away. He was afraid that if he stayed any longer he would do something he would regret.
