Last Saturday, I attended a Worship Leader training at church, led by the worship leader from the adult service himself.
The first question that he posted to us, was, what do you find the most challenging when you lead worship?
The first thing that came into my head was being in one heart with the congregation.
After a week, coming back together on sundays, we all have a different heart and attitude. But as a worship leader, it is important that you lead the congregation to God in the right heart and right attitude.
Ah hock (another adult worship leader) mentioned something that made me think deep. He said that he find it the most challenging to lead worship when he feels far away from God. As a worship leader, it is your responsibility to bring your congregation closer to God through praise and worship. How can you do so, if you youself is not close to God? How can you do so, when after a week of rushing for projects, meeting deadlines, quarrels with your family?
So the first step to leading worship, is to make sure that you are close to God. Because if you aren't, you may continue singing, your skills and techniques will breeze you through the session, but nothing touches the congregation, nothing touches you, and worst of all, nothing touches God.
I think it is important to remember that in every worship, God is the one and only spectator. And what made it most difficult is that He sees right through you. He knows what you're thinking, whether you are worried about htiting a wrong note, whether you are fearful of the judgemental eyes staring at you, whether you are thinking more of yourself when you should be focusing on Him.
Sure, it's true that being a worship leader means drawing people close to God. But this, is not done through your ability, but God's. We are just a tool, an instrument that plays the music, but God, He is the conductor of the band. He gives us that ability, and at the end of the day, He gives us the results.
Results not meaning how well you sang, or how well you have expressed the song. But how many lives have He touched on that day, through you.
So yes, you are important, as a worship leader. But never as important as God's people. And never as important as God.
