The description in the article indicates that the main logo and the "DW Tardis" icon are meant to be used seprately -- and I think each one looks a lot better on its own than they do stuck together like you see in the pic.
By itself, the main logo is hardly controversial. It's clean, legible, and goes back to the classic "little Doctor over big Who" look of most of the old-series logos.
Personally, I like the "DW Tardis" as a brand icon -- especially Moffat's description of it as "a completely irresistible doodle".
Does anyone really remember how embarrassingly tacky the "disco diamond" logo of the '70s and the "neon sign" of the early '80s were at the time?
And as for "skewing the show younger" -- back in the days when the Doctor was played by a succession of old men, it was expressly conceived as a children's show.
I happent to have LIKED the disco diamond, and for me, that's the iconic logo.
In fact, that's the logo I printed out and taped to the external hard drive on which I have all the classic episodes. (and I'm almost done watching them now... just finished Season 25)
I, for one, like the Tardis DW logo. As for the text logo, That's changed a lot over the past four and a half decades. Watching all the episodes gives a sense of flux capacity for that logo. It changes, just as the Doctor's face does.

Much like I have a soft spot in my heart for Tom Baker because he was the first Doctor I watched, I have a soft spot in my heart for the diamond logo because it was the first logo I saw.
The neon logo from the later part of the John Nathan-Turner era isn't all that bad, but it does so heavily borrow from the Star Wars style.
Frankly, I kinda like this new logo in spite of the whole "DW" thing. I definitely like it over the most recent logo, that crazy pointy cat's eye oval with the letters that just barely fit inside. There was no goddamn presence to that logo, honestly, and it always felt like a rush job to me.
Actually, it felt like a logo for An Original Sci-Fi Channel Presentation and that's what I think turned me off the most.
