A fishing boat in the Atlantic Ocean hauled in its catch for the day, the crew fighting with the tangle of the nets and laughing at the futile flopping and struggling of the fish trapped inside. An unexpected wave rocked the boat, knocking the men back a bit, and a struggle ensued to keep from losing their catch. An argument broke out moments later about how it wasn’t supposed to storm today.
And yet, the clouds were dark, for some reason, when there was nothing but sunlight moments before. And the water that washed over the deck when the wave hit wasn’t water at all- it just took the fisherman a few moments to realize it, too wrapped up in their own little lives as humans were wont to be. One of them grabbed the captain’s coat while the old man went to steady the net in order to make sure that they’d, at least, be coming home with a decent catch, despite the setbacks, and after ignoring the boy for as long as possible, he finally turned to look.
The deck was covered in blood.
The fishermen abandoned their nets, spilling wriggling fish onto the deck as they rushed to the side of the boat to see that the ocean had turned the color of blood. The youngest of their lot leaned down and swiped at the water as best as he could, his gloved fingers coming up bloody. Not just the color then- actual blood.
The mean shouted and screamed and panicked. The captain merely removed his hat and said a prayer to the Heavens.
On New York City pier, an angel heard it. Unfortunately, he could not reply.
It was nothing personal, of course.
He just had a schedule to keep.
