Cardboard boxes aren't waterproof

An important lesson I learned today while quirksilver and I were helping lordriffington - cardboard boxes are not a great thing to store stuff in.

We went down to Rocklea to where Riff had a lot of stuff in lockable storage. The place was trashed, and most of what he had in storage was not salvageable. The storage center had water up to the second floor, and the water had come in over the tops of the walls in the storage units, filling them with water. A few of the units that had not yet been opened had alarming bulges outward in their roller doors, suggesting that they contained 3 cubic meters of water.

To give you an idea, the footpath outside the center was a mountain of stuff being shoveled out of the storage units:

This is a scene that is repeated all over the place in Brisvenice at the moment, and most of the length of Fairfield Road had similar piles of trashed goods. Even outside the Viper Room (a brothel, bawdy house, or house of ill repute) there was a mound of leather(ish) couches and sodden acoustic insulation.

To give you a bit more of an idea, there was a Toll logistics center across the road, with the high-water mark clearly visible

Although it may not show up in this photo, the high water mark is about 1 or 2 feet below the line of windows in the brick wall, that is to say about 10 feet above the road.

Across the road was the car park for the railway station. There were a few cars that had obviously been caught in the water. They were covered in silt, and obviously had been floating around banging into each other, as they were covered in dents, had broken windows, and were scattered around the space like toys.

Oh, and the floody mud is kind of smelly. It's a Very Good Thing to be able to come home to a dry house and have a hot shower before settling back with some pate and a glass of wine. I am extraordinarily privileged.
