How did you spend your Saturday night?
Nicole and I went to the Heidelberg Baseball Team Reverse Raffle.
I walked in with $130, and walked out with about $1400.
Here's how:
A reverse raffle, if you've never been, is a raffle...in reverse. Rather than hoping to be the first ticket called, you want to be the last ticket called.
290 of the 300 tickets were sold, with the remaining 10 set to be given away throughout the night.
My ticket, #265, was the 30th number drawn. Luckily for me, the 30th ticket drawn also won me $25 dollars. I used this $25 to buy my table a round of drinks, for good karma.
I went in on some raffle tickets with one of the women at our table...these raffle tickets were for a chance to win 3 of the remaining 10 tickets not sold, thus increasing your chances of winning. Well, we didn't get picked. Later, we went in again on a raffle to win two of the remaining unsold tickets. This time, we won, giving us tickets 294 and 295.
At the door, they were selling Bingo cards, and if you filled up your card (with the ticket numbers 1-75 as they were called), and were the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd to do so, you won some money. Well, suffice it to say, my good luck continued, as I tied for 2nd with the bingo, winning $25. I donated this $25 back to the baseball team, for good karma.
Throughout the night, there were 6 horse races....in each race, 6 horses were auctioned off. If you were the highest bidder, you won a horse. A horse was just one of those little stick horses that one of the winning bidders would jockey. The horses were numbered 1-6, and Coach Palm rolled dice to see which horses moved up. Our table pooled our money horses. Our horse for heat 1 was soundly beat, and our horse for heat 2 and 3 put up a fight, but didn't win. We didn't win a horse for heat 4. For heat 5, though, our horse won, winning me $60. I kept this. Also, by winning, our horse was entered in to a final race with all the other heat winners. More on that in a bit.
TIcket 294, one of my tickets I shared, was drawn 242nd, leaving us one ticket.
The final horse race was played after the 289th ticket was drawn. Our horse won the finals again, giving me another $60. So far, I've pretty much broken even on the night, with lots of good karma building.
After the 290th ticket was drawn, the final unsold remianing ticket was raffled off. One ticket....with a 1 in 10 chance of winning the grand prize. Also, the final 8 tickets were guaranteed at least $150. I bought two raffle tickets. And, yeah....I won that extra ticket.
So, let's recap: there are 10 tickets left, I have all of one, and half of another. Here's the prize breakdown:
291 - $0
292 - $0
293 - $150
294 - $150
295 - $250
296 - $250
297 - $300
298 - $500
299 - $700
300 - $2000
I share ticket #295, and have #300.
Tickets 291 - 296 were #109, #134, #143, #45, #73, and #288. This leaves 4 tickets, 2 of which are mine.
297 - #260. Leaving 3 tickets, 2 are mine.
298 - #222.
Yep. That's right. I have the last two....sharing half of one, all of the other.
Now, here's where I goof, in a celebration/whirlwindish frenzy. I say, "Let's split it," and without really thinking, I split $2700 (the top two prizes), with the other woman, even though we should've split the grand prize.
So, rather than winning $1700, I won $1350.....still nothing to sneeze at. I gave $100 more dollars back to the baseball team.
That was my Saturday night. How was yours?
