NO BETTER TIME TO BE A GEORGE HARRISON FAN!

Sep 27, 2011 17:02

Today I received my copy of George Harrison:  Living in the Material World!

I had assumed the books wouldn't ship out until the HBO documentary premiered, but Amazon was kind enough to let me know two days ago that my big, beautiful book had shipped out early.  Happy birthday to MEEEEEE!  (well, tomorrow.)

It's beyond amazing, you guys - yes, we have seen many of the pictures before, but I'd guess at least half the photos in the book are new (to me, at least.)  Many of the new ones are from George's camera:  he started photographing his travels much earlier than I realized; one of the most extraordinary photos is of an enormous concert crowd, taken from the stage.  It's staggering to imagine looking out on all that blind adoration; I can only begin to imagine how frightening that same view became over time.

So much more, and I've only flipped through the book once.  It's about the size of a standard vinyl LP, 393 pages - of which easily more than 85% are photos.  I've already chosen a few I'm dying to scan, but one picture is two-page center spread ... not only will I need to get access to a larger scanner, I've got to figure out how to best scan the bit in the "dip" where the two pages are bound to the spine.  Any advice?  The other I'm fairly certain is brand-new to the public:  George, Dhani and Winston in 1997. (snifff)

On a cheerier note - how did I not know they had a dog named Winston?

SOOOOOO much love for Olivia Harrison right now, what a true labor of love - even more obviously so when you realize there are so few pictures of her or Dhani included.  Not that I would have minded, but there's no denying that this book is a gorgeous, incredibly generous love letter to George and his fans.
