In Paul McCartney’s new video for “Early Days,” the 72-year-old ex-Beatle pays homage to meeting John Lennon in a beautifully shot black-and-white clip from director Vincent Haycock (“Nip/Tuck,” Florence + the Machine). The song comes from McCartney’s latest album “NEW,” a collection of songs the Wall Street Journal described last fall as “a triumph,” where he draws on his past and places it in a contemporary context. This video continues that tradition.

“The idea was inspired by the chance meeting in 1957 that would change Paul, John, George, and Ringo’s lives forever,” Haycock said. “Paul generously shared some old stories with me that inspired many of the scenes in the video.”

The video was shot in Los Angeles, Natchez, Miss. and Faraday, La., with the total time spent constructing the nearly five-and-a-half-minute clip totaling a month. Look closely, and you’ll spot McCartney jamming with a few blues guitarists and one Johnny Depp.

In related McCartney news, earlier this week he resumed touring in Albany, N.Y. aftercanceling dates in Japan due to a viral illness. His U.S. tour is slated to run through October.
