Discussion Day! Is that true? Edition

"Still, Harrison became increasingly aggravated when McCartney usurped Lennon as the titular leader of the band, after Lennon was forced to relinquish that role when his drug dependency accelerated."

I read that in an article about George that highlighted some of his lesser known songs. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that statement? I can't recall George commenting on it, but then again I'm one of the newer fans and have less knowledge about those sorts of things. If anyone can shed some light on it that would be greatly appreciated.

Also, was John 'forced' to give up leadership or did he back away from that role willingly?
