So Ben H. and I went sailing at the Rez yesterday. The first hour was so annoying. The wind was against us, so we couldnt get away from the shore. We spent about half an hour just trying to get out of the trees the wind kept sending us to. I even got out of the boat, and started to tow the vessel to an area where we could depart. We finally got free and Ben started to pick up speed. He looks at me, as he starts to speed away, and tells me to hurry. I swam fast enough to catch up and did a dive onto the ship, similar to dolphins jumping up out of a pool at Sea World. So now we are out in the lake, and we had problems catching the wind. Then we realized that the mast was to far down into the craft, so we had to head back to shore. We got back, fixed the problem, then did the whole stay away from the trees routine again. So after about an hour we were finally sailing.
We did however run into issues with the wind, which would change direction abruptly. Eventually Ben let me be the Captain of the Ship, controlling the sail, and steering. He was amazed with how fast I caught on. He says that I must have sailed before, yet I never had until yesterday. I told him it was because I was Norwegian, the great seafaring people, and I also grew up in a family that has a nautical history. In some way, I knew what I was doing, I just had never done it before.
Anyway, I gave Ben back the Captain's Chair, and he managed to capture the wind. We were doing very well, until something went wrong and I was immersed in water, as was he, and as was the ship. We managed to right the vessel, but we were flooded, so my hat became the bail bucket. Somehow we managed to secure the sail, as well as the rudder so the craft didnt go out of control or anything. I was in the water so much trying to secure the rope for the sail, and such. What fun.
Anyway it was a lot of fun.
Old Russian guys who know everything are crazy. Trust me.
